Recommended Tools

Before Working Inside Your Computer

This document provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that:

lll You have performed the steps in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

You have read the safety information in your Dell Product Information Guide.

When replacing a component, you have already removed the original, if installed.

NOTE: The color of your system and certain system components may appear differently than shown in this document. Recommended Tools

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:

llll Small flat-blade screwdriver

Phillips screwdriver

Small plastic scribe

Flash BIOS update (see the Dell Support website at )

Before Working Inside Your Computer

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not

covered by your warranty. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such

as a connector on the back of the computer. NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal

mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins. NOTICE: When disconnecting a cable, pull on the cable's connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. For cable connectors with locking

tabs, press inward on the locking tabs to release the connector. When connecting a cable, ensure that the connectors are correctly oriented and

aligned to avoid damage to the connector and/or the connector's pins.

that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

Start

, click the arrow icon, and then click Shut Down to turn off your computer.

NOTE: Ensure that the computer is off and not in a power management mode. If you cannot shut down the computer using the operating system,

press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.

nect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer, and then unplug it from the network wall jack.

nect any telephone or network cables from the computer.

any installed cards from the ExpressCard slot (see Removing an ExpressCard or Blank) and the 8-in-1 memory card reader (see Removing a

Memory Card or Blank).

NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you service the computer.

NOTE: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell

computers.

the computer over.

the battery release latch until they click into place.

Flashing the BIOS

Flashing the BIOS From a CD

Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive

If a BIOS-update program CD is provided with a new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS-update program CD, flash the BIOS

from the hard drive.

Flashing the BIOS From a CD

NOTICE: Plug the AC adapter into a known good power source to prevent a loss of power. Failure to do so may cause system damage.

that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly.

NOTE: If you use a BIOS update program CD to flash the BIOS, press before inserting the CD so that you can set up the computer to boot from a

CD for one time only. Otherwise, you must enter the system setup program to change the default boot order.

the BIOS-update program CD, and turn on the computer.

NOTICE: Do not interrupt this process once it begins. Doing so may cause system the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the

computer will automatically reboot.

during POST to enter the system setup program.

and to reset the computer defaults.

, select Save/Exit, and press to save configuration changes.

the flash BIOS update program CD from the drive and restart the computer.

Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive

Download Now to download the file.

the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.

The File Download window appears.

Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

The Save In window appears.

the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.

The file downloads to your desktop.

Close if the Download Complete window appears.

The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.

Using the Memory Card Reader

Removing a Memory Card or Blank

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.

NOTICE: Use the memory card configuration utility (click the icon in the notification area) to select a card and stop it from functioning before you

remove it from the computer. If you do not stop the card in the configuration utility, you may lose the card into the slot to release it from the card reader. When it is partially ejected, remove the card.

Installing a Memory Card

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information can install a memory card in the computer while the computer is running. The computer automatically detects the card.

Memory cards are generally marked with a symbol (such as a triangle or an arrow) or a label to indicate which end to insert into the slot. The cards are keyed

to prevent incorrect insertion. If card orientation is not clear, see the documentation that came with the card.

If you encounter too much resistance, do not force the card. Check the card orientation and try again.

The computer recognizes the memory card and automatically loads the appropriate device driver. If the configuration program tells you to load the

NOTICE: The key caps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the

Processor Module

Removing the Processor Module

CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.

the instructions in Before You Begin.

the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly).

NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.

loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.

NOTICE: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor thermal-cooling assembly. The oils in

your skin can reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads. NOTICE: When removing the processor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor module.

Replacing the Processor Module

CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: Do not touch the processor die. Press and hold the processor down on the substrate on which the die is mounted while turning the cam screw

to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and processor. NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor module. Seating the processor module properly in the ZIF

socket does not require force. A processor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the

microprocessor and ZIF socket. NOTE: If a new processor is installed, you will receive a new thermal-cooling assembly, which will include an affixed thermal pad, or you will receive a

new thermal pad along with a tech sheet to illustrate proper installation.

the pin-1 corner of the processor module with the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket, then insert the processor module.

NOTE: The pin-1 corner of the processor module has a triangle that aligns with the triangle on the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket.

When the processor module is properly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the

others, the module is not seated properly.

Sleep state. NOTICE: Hard drives are extremely fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive.

Replacing the Hard Drive

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: Hard drives are extremely fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive.

e the hard drive cover and tighten the two screws to secure the cover to the hard drive.

NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the hard drive into place. Excessive force may result in damage to the connector.

the hard drive into the hard drive bay until the drive is fully seated.

e the two screws to secure the hard drive.

l the operating system for your computer, as needed (see "Restoring Your Operating System" in your Owner's Manual).

l the drivers and utilities for your computer, as needed (see "Reinstalling Drivers and Utilities" in your Owner's Manual).

e the plastic grip together to release the latch button.

the battery latch assembly into place.

e the spring.

the battery release button with the hole in the battery latch assembly, then press the button into place.

Memory

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information can increase your computer memory by installing memory modules on the system board. See "Specifications" in your Owner's Manual for information on

the memory supported by your computer. Install only memory modules that are intended for your computer.

NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer computer has two user-accessible SODIMM sockets, DIMM A and DIMM B, accessed from the bottom of the computer.

NOTICE: If you need to install memory modules in two connectors, install a memory module in the connector labeled "DIMMA" before you install a

module in the connector labeled "DIMMB."

Removing Memory Module

The memory modules are located under the memory module cover on the bottom of the computer.

the computer upside-down, loosen the eight captive screws on the cover and remove the cover.

NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory module securing clips. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such

as a connector on the back of the computer).

your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up.

Replacing Memory Module

NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such

as a connector on the back of the computer).

the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the

module and reinstall it.

NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot. No error message indicates this failure.

NOTICE: If the cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.

Flash Cache Module

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the

computer.

If you ordered a wireless Mini-Card with your computer, the card is already installed. Your computer supports three types of wireless Mini-Cards:

lll Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) card

Mobile Broadband or Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)

Removing Mini-Card

the eight captive screws securing the back and remove the cover.

nect the antenna cables from the Mini-card.

NOTE: The Mini-card may have two or three connectors, depending on the type of card you ordered.

NOTICE: The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, check the connectors on the card and on the system board, and

realign the card. NOTICE: To avoid damage to the Mini-card, never place cables under the card.

Removing the Palm Rest

CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.

the internal card with Bluetooth wireless technology, if installed (see Removing the Internal Card With Bluetooth® Wireless Technology).

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the Bluetooth cable connector from the system board connector.

nect the button board cable from the system board.

nect the speaker cable from the system board.

the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly).

the nine screws from the bottom of the computer.

NOTE: The screw locations may vary slightly from the image shown below.

the computer over and remove the two screws securing the top of the palm rest.

nect the touch pad connector and the device status lights LED connector from the system board.

NOTICE: Do not use force to separate the palm rest from the computer. If you encounter resistance, gently flex or apply pressure to the palm rest, or

move along the edge, working away from the area of resistance, until the palm rest is free.

from left to right, carefully lift the palm rest along the rear edge, near the hinge brackets, then gently lift the palm rest to remove it from the

computer.

Replacing the Palm Rest

CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.

the palm rest with the base of the computer and gently snap it into place.

t the touch pad connector and the device status lights LED connector to the system board.

e the two screws on the top of the palm rest.

the computer over and replace the nine screws on the bottom of the computer to secure the palm rest.

Removing an ExpressCard or Blank

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information the card or blank to remove it from its slot.

Save a blank to use when no ExpressCard is installed in a slot. Blanks protect unused slots from dust and other particles.

Installing an ExpressCard or Blank

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information can install an ExpressCard while the computer is running. The computer automatically detects the card.

ExpressCards are generally marked with a symbol (such as a triangle or an arrow) or a label to indicate which end to insert into the slot. The cards are keyed

to prevent incorrect insertion. If card orientation is not clear, see the documentation that came with the card.

To install an ExpressCard:

the card with the top side of the card facing up.

the card into the slot until the card is completely seated in its connector.

If you encounter too much resistance, do not force the card. Check the card orientation and try again.

The computer recognizes the ExpressCard and automatically loads the appropriate device driver. If the configuration program tells you to load the

manufacturer's drivers, use the media that came with the ExpressCard.

Subscriber Identity Module (Optional)

Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) identify users uniquely through an International Mobile Subscriber Identity.

Replacing the SIM

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTE: Only GSM (HSDPA) type cards need a SIM. EVDO cards do not use a SIM.

The system board's BIOS chip contains the Service Tag, which is also visible on a barcode label on the bottom of the computer. The replacement kit for the

system board includes media that provides a utility for transferring the Service Tag to the replacement system board.
