>Wealth gap on campus
The increasingly notable wealth gaps in Chinese society are dramatized
on campus at the start of the academic year.
Beijing. Freshwoman Wang Xiaoyan, with the help of a poverty certificate,
received subsidies from her university, including a bedding set, a
shopping card worth RMB100, RMB300 in cash as well as a mobile phone worth
RMB1,000. She brought from home nothing but a small suitcase for her
clothes. One of her fellow students, Zhu Ling, got out of a nearby
Mercedes-Benz, took out 12 suitcases and proceeded to hire 3 porters to
carry all the stuff to her dormitory.
Jinan, Shandong. Freshwoman Xiao He was accompanied by her parents with
6 suitcases, including Apple Inc’s 3 hallmark products – iPhone, iPad
and MacBook. On the same day, freshman Jiang Fusheng walked to his dorm
by himself with a backpack on his shoulder and a plastic bag containing
apples. His backpack has nothing but a dozen pieces of clothes and shoes
for the 4 seasons.
According to a 2011 survey of more than 1,700 students by China Campus
magazine, most of its target readers spend RMB800-1,200 per month. There
also emerged the polarization of students’ monthly expenditures, ranging
from less than RMB300 to more than RMB10,000.

>600 students in UK at risk
London Metropolitan University’s license to recruit students from outside
the EU was revoked Wednesday after failing in immigration and visa
regulations, the UK-based Chinese Business Gazette reported. It
threatened the future of thousands of non-EU international students at
the university, including more than 600 Chinese. They have to find ways
to move to other universities by the end of the year. Otherwise, they would
be deported from the UK.
>Outrageous cellphone bills
An iPhone user in Shenzhen was billed RMB14,000, after he went on a
business trip to Macao and used QQ, an instant messaging program, during
the 8-hour trip via international data roaming, Yangcheng Evening News
reported. The “bill shock” is becoming more frequent as more people start
using smartphones, telecom operators say. They recommend turning off the
GPRS data service before leaving the mainland.
Four reasons account for a smartphone “traffic shock”, carriers suggest.
They are malicious programs, automatic updates of software, data roaming
outside of carriers’ coverage, and low-quality bandit cellphones that
consume more traffic.
>Iran nuclear work underground
Economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation have failed to slow Iran’s nuclear program; if anything, the program is speeding up. Iran has
already installed more than 2,100 centrifuges (离心机) inside a virtually
impenetrable underground laboratory, a report by the International Atomic
Energy Agency said. The New York Times said Iran is close to producing
nuclear weapons in a location invulnerable to Israeli attack.
>Men prefer a nice face
Men would choose a nice face over a great body when picking a partner,
statistics from UK-based dating site show. Around 22% men are
looking for a woman with nice eyes, and 20% are drawn to girls with a cute
smile. Just 8% of men listed a good bum as the most important feature,
followed by 7% who see great breasts as the must-have asset.

【In Brief】
>The French are bleaker about their country’s future than at any time

Wang Jian, a 28-year-old mechanic from a rural area of Jiangsu, has built
a replica of a Lamborghini Reventon with simple tools, CRI reported. The
1:1 model, nicknamed “the most awesome sports car” by netizens, was
assembled with parts from a used Nissan van and a Volkswagen Santana sedan.
It cost Wang RMB60,000 in all and is being used to transport fertilizer.

Despite the applause, Wang has been urged by local authorities not to drive
his car on the road due to safety concerns.

Guangdong’s Foshan has banned begging in all public places, such as plazas,

much stress on showing its good side and that the move is inhumane. What’s your opinion?

I lived in Foshan for 2 years before I came to Guangzhou, and I quite agree
with the solution, as beggars in Foshan are quite different from those
in other cities.
Though some of them are old and disabled, most of them are in good health,
and they just choose begging as their vocation. They will behave fiercely
or ruthlessly if they cannot get anything from passersby. Once when I was
walking on the street, a boy beggar tried to steal my cellphone.
But I think the government should first figure out some solutions to the
life problems of the people really in need, in order to avoid more social
problems.
