14、Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies,

swimming, horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special

time—like my wedding (婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote

less often. One day a card that I sent

came back, stamped “Address (地址) Unknown. ” I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share (分享) happiness of my children and then grandchildren.

And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that

only a friend like Linda could fill.

One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and

whose last name was Wagman — Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but J still

wrote to her.

She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”

Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each

15、If you’ve tried studying when you’re tired, you know that it can seem very impossible to do well.

A study of sleep in sparrows suggests the relationship between sleep and the ability to learn may be more complicated(复杂) than people knew.

Niels C·Rattenborg, a scientist from Wisconsin-Madison, wanted to find out how the sparrows were able to deal with

getting so much less sleep. He and his team brought eight wild birds into a lab and watched them for one year. They

invented a game to check how well the birds could learn. In the game, the sparrows had to peck(啄)three buttons

(按钮)in a right order to get a food treat. The scientists discovered that the birds’ ability to learn the right button order

depended on(依靠)two things: the time of year and the amount of sleep the birds had had.

During the migrationseason, the sparrows were restless at night and got much less sleep than usual. Even so, they

(迁徙)were able to understand how to get the food quickly as if they’d had a regular night of sleep. Outside the migration

season, they found the sparrows that got less sleep than usual had much more difficulty learning how to get the food

treats than birds that had a regular sleep.

The results show that the sparrows can deal with much less sleep during the migration season than usual. If scientists

can find out why, they may learn from sparrows and find ways of helping people deal with getting much less sleep. Until

scientists fully understand the relationship between sleep and learning, it’s better to get plenty of sleep when preparing

for an exam.

1.The passage is mainly about .

A.sparrows’ migration.

B.sleep lessons from Sparrows.

C.how to get less sleep while studying

D.how sparrows that got less sleep get food treats

2.Why can sparrows get much less sleep during the migration season?

A.They eat more.

B.The climate is better

C.They can get food quickly

D.Scientists still don’t know the reason.

3.What fact does the passage lead you to believe?

A.We should sleep as little as sparrows do.

B.We should get enough sleep before an exam.

C.When tired, we should try to focus on(聚焦) our study.

D.When tired, we should check how we can sleep less than usual.

16、In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating and

keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider (蜘蛛) with four legs.

Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when it was broken. That is because its

computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine

is working. They all give signals (信号) to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then work

out the machine’s shape at any moment.

The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help

scientists create better man-made (人造的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who losethem. It might also

help scientists understand how people and animals work out their own sense of place in space.

“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says

Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in the US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

1.(小题1)Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?

A.They have no computers inside.

B.The computer has changed a lot.

C.They cannot repair themselves.

D.The computer cannot work if the robot changes.

2.(小题2)The new technology allows the robot to .

A.do house work for humans

B.tell people where it is

C.remember a lot of information

D.keep working after being damaged

3.(小题3)The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to .

A.sensors B.arms and legs C.scientists D.robots

4.(小题4)How do the sensors in the robot work?

A.They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.

B.They can find out where the damage comes from.

C.They can replace (替代) the computer when it’s broken.

D.They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.

18、There are different ways to store fish. One way to keep fish for future use is canning it. We’ll have this article

describing, step by step, how to prepare dried fish.

Begin with fish that are out of the water. If the fish are small, leave their heads on. Cut off the heads if the fish are longer

than twenty centimeters or weigh more than one hundred fifteen grams.

Now clean the freshly caught fish. Cut off the scales and cut open the stomach. Remove everything inside. Then wash the

fish in clean water and fill salt into them.

Next, put the fish in a container with a solution (溶液) of three hundred grams of salt and one liter of water. This will

19、I am Li Hua. Here are some of my thoughts about English. I think English is the most widely used language in the

world. English helps us understand different cultures in the world. English can also help us improve our communication

skills. And speaking more English can improve our confidence.

At present, I can make simple communications with my classmates in English. I also like making speeches. I won the

prize in the school speech contest last year. And I believe that I should be able to speak English fluently when I go to a

Western country.

However, I have some problems in learning English. I can’t use the grammar rules correctly. Sometimes I can’t express

myself clearly in writing. I often find it hard to remember more difficult words.

At last, I have some suggestions for English teaching as well. I think teachers should communicate with us in English

when they are in class.

I wish our school will consider my advice.

Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each

other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t

lose each other again!

This will

remove the blood from the meat. Keep the fish in the saltwater for about thirty minutes. After that , wash them again in

clean water.

Next, put the fish in a solution that has more salt in the water. The water should be salty enough so that the fish can float

to the top. If the fish sink to the bottom of the container, add more salt to the water.

Cover the container with a clean piece of wood. Place a heavy stone on the wood to hold it down. Leave the fish there for
