Part 3 Reading Comprehension
Task 1
Read the passage. Choose the best answer. (10 points)
When we talk about the disadvantages of cars, we often focus on air pollution or traffic
jams. However, we rarely consider how much space cars take up, and the impact that this
has on the look, and feel, of our cities.
The average car, which weighs around two tons, is 80 percent empty when being driven
by one person. Most of the day, cars are sitting empty in car parks and on streets. Think of
all of the space required for parking! In the USA, for example, there are a billion parking
spots in total. That’s four parking spots for every one car.
If self-driving cars become a reality, they could be shared rather than owned. You would
call for a car when you needed it, and it would come right to your door. The self-driving
cars themselves would be always on the road, either picking up and dropping off passengers
or else they would be charging up or refueling in a central location. This would mean there
would be much less need for street parking.
In addition, if all of the cars on the road were autonomous vehicles, they would take up
far less space on the road. If collisions became less frequent (due to human error no longer
being a factor) cars could be smaller and thinner, taking up less space. City planners could
then reduce the width of streets or the number of lanes, and travel times would not be
affected.
The reduction in parking areas and roads would mean that cities would gain back so much
space—space for parks, for flower gardens and outdoor cafés. What would you like to see
in your city?
( ) 1. Choose the best title for the article.
A. Self-driving cars and the future of our planet
B. The problem with car parks
C. Advantages and disadvantages of self-driving cars
D. How self-driving cars will change cities
( ) 2. The writer argues that cars currently _______.
A. cause too many accidents
B. take up too much space
C. waste energy and money
D. cause air pollution
( ) 3. The writer suggests that self-driving cars would have a greater impact if _______.
A. they were designed to be very small
B. they were owned by individuals
4 / 11
C. they were shared among city residents
D. they were built with eco-friendly materials
( ) 4. Which of the following does the writer NOT suggest would be a result of autonomous
vehicles?
A. More frequent collisions. B. Narrower streets.
C. Less cars parked on the street D. Fewer lanes on the roads.
( ) 5. What does the writer suggest is done with the space freed up by autonomous vehicles?
A. Cities could have more shopping centers.
B. New housing could be built.
C. Cultural attractions could be developed.
D. Car parks could become green spaces, like parks.
Task 2
Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with no more than three words. (10 points)
Smart home technology can make your home feel like magic. However, did you know
that a major benefit of smart home technology is its ability to conserve energy and contribute
to saving the planet? Here are some ways that smart home technology can promote an eco-
friendly lifestyle.
Smart homes can go a long way to minimizing energy use. The average American
household spends about $2000 on electricity bills per year, so this shows that smart
technology cannot only be a greener option, but it can also help you to save money.
Smart thermostats can save a lot of energy. You can set the thermostat schedule to be
actively pushing cool air or heat only when someone is occupying a room, and some models
can even learn your habits, so you don’t have to manually control them too much.
Wasting electricity leaves a massive carbon footprint. Studies show that 17% of that
footprint is caused by electric lighting. Think about every time you’ve accidentally left lights
on when leaving the house or going on holiday. All of the energy waste adds up.
One of the biggest benefits of installing smart lights is you never have to worry about
forgetting to switch the lights off—you can simply turn them off from a smartphone app.
Smart technology can also help you to save water. For example, by replacing your
shower head to a smart version, you can reduce water usage. Some smart shower heads come
with LED lights that turn the water spray blue, green, purple, and red based on the volume
you’ve used. They also come with accompanying smartphone apps so you can set thresholds
and view your water and heating savings at any point. If all American households installed
smart water-saving features, water use would decrease by 30 percent, saving an estimated
5.4 billion gallons per day.
The best part of smart home technology? The process is completely effortless on your
5 / 11
part, as smart home technology can be set up to learn your habits and to run in a way that is
kind to the planet.
Smart home technology not only makes your home more comfortable, but it is also very
good for the (6)___________.
Smart thermostats are able to tell whether or not someone is occupying a(n)
(7)___________.
You don’t need to remember to (8)___________ smart lights off, as they are controlled
by an app.
Some smart (9)___________ can show you how much water you’ve used.
The best part of smart home technology is that it won’t cost you any (10)___________
to run.
Task 3
Read the following passage. Are the statements true (T
)
or false (F)? (10 points)

If you’re interested in a career in AI, you’ll know that there is a wide variety of job
opportunities in this field. Examples of AI jobs include being a machine learning engineer, data

The first question to ask yourself is whether you have the skills and qualifications to work

First of all, a degree in a relevant subject is required. You’ll need to have strong analytical
skills and problem-solving skills. You’ll also be able to think creatively. On top of all this, you’ll
need to be able to demonstrate industry knowledge. All of these skills can be achievable through
online re-skilling or studying for a master’s degree. If you decide to follow an online program,
make sure that you take up one from a reputable institution.

Python, Java, and C++. It’s a good idea to learn more than one programming language since
organizations these days are focusing on individuals with multiple skill sets.
Make sure you take time to develop your communication skills. Explaining concepts like
artificial intelligence and machine learning can be tough if you are not able to do so simply and
clearly. Having good communication skills is going to be much easier when you need to explain
such concepts to individuals with very little technical knowledge.
Finally, do not understand the importance of being good at (and interested in) math.
Numbers and data should intrigue AI engineers, and you should feel comfortable working with
