A
When wome n sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simulta neously (同时的) about a variety
of subjects, in cludi ng childre n, men, careers and what' s happe ning in their lives. When groups of men and wome n watch a movie
together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the scree n -- they can' t do both -- and
they don' t un dersta nd that wome n can. Besides, wome n con sider that the point of all gett ing together is to have a good time and
develop relati on ships -- not just to sit there like couch potatoes stari ng at the scree n.
During the ad breaks, a man ofte n asks a woma n to expla in the plot and tell him where the relati on ship betwee n the
characters is going. He is un able, un like wome n, to read the subtle body Ian guage sig nals that reveal how the characters are feeli
ng emoti on ally. Since wome n origi nally spe nt their days with the other wome n and childre n in the group, they developed the ability
to com muni cate successfully in order to mai ntai n relatio nships. For a woma n, speech continues to have such a clear purpose: to
build relatio nships and make frien ds. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.
Men see the telepho ne as a com muni cati on tool for sending facts and in formati on to other people, but a woma n sees it as
a means of bonding. A woma n can spe nd two weeks on vacati on with her girlfrie nd and, whe n she retur ns home, teleph one the
same girlfrie nd and talk for ano ther two hours.
There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls' mothers talked them more, is the reason why girls
talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author Social Behaviour and Language Acquisiti on, con ducted experime nts that
found mothers talked to and looked at, baby girls more often tha n baby boys. Scientific evidence shows parents res the brain bias of
their children. Since a girl' s brain is better organized to send and receive speech , we therefore talk to them more. Con seque ntly,
mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually poin ted to receive only short grunts in reply.
56. While watch ing TV with others, wome n Usually talk a lot because they __________
A. are afraid of awkward sile nce with their families and friends
B. can both talk and watch the scree n at the Same time
C. think they can have a good time and develop relationships
D. have to expla in the plot and body Ian guage to their husba nds
57. After a vacatio n with her girlfrie nd, a woma n would talk to her aga in on the phone for hours in order
to _____________ .
A. experie nce the happy time aga in B. keep a close tie with her
C. recomme nd her a new scenic spot D. remind her of someth ing forgotte n
58. What does the author want to tell us most?
A. Wome n' s brains are better orga ni zed for Ian guage and com muni cati on
B. Wome n love to talk because they are more sociable tha n men.
C. Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.
D. Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.
59. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Wome n Are Socially Trai ned to Talk
C, Women Love to Talk
B. Talki ng Mai ntai ns Relatio nships
D. Men Talk Differe ntly from Wome n
