Sony Sold Out of PlayStation 5 Consoles in 2020
With 4.5 million PlayStation 5s sold in 2020 — despite
only being released in November — the console has been a
sales success. However, the figure could have been higher
if Sony hadn't completely sold out before the year ended.
Preorders for the PS5 began on September 17 and sold
out in just a few hours. Sony promised more consoles would
be made available, but by 19 November Jim Ryan, Sony
Interactive Entertainment's CEO, told Tass that "Absolutely
everything is sold."
Even now, new PS5s are hard to find, with new arrivals
quickly selling out.
Sony said that problems related to COVID-19 are
responsible for manufacturing delays, including an increase
in demand for electronics which is making it hard to get
the parts needed to make more consoles.
Sony also struggled to keep up with demand for the
PlayStation 4, but delays with that console were caused by
how complicated it was to make. However, over the same time
period the new console has outsold the PS4, which came out
in November 2013 and reached 4.2 million sales before the
end of the year.
Sony expects sales figures for the PS5 to be over 7.6
million by the end of March.
The first PlayStation console was released in Japan in
1994 and the US in 1995. By 2005 it had become the first
console to sell over 100 million units. The PlayStation 2,
which was released in 2000, is the highest selling console
of all time with over 157 million units sold.
