Entrants Flood Race to Rival iPad

A race to respond to Apple Inc.'s hit iPad gadget enters a new phase next week, as a

host of companies use a Las Vegas trade show to talk up a broad array of tablet-style

devices.

Companies expected to introduce touchscreen tablets at the Consumer Electronics

Show include big names such as Motorola Inc., Dell Inc. and Acer Inc., as well as

smaller manufacturers. Trying to stand apart, the devices will offer displays of various

sizes and different operating systems. Some will have two built-in cameras; others

none.

The stakes are high for many players, particularly Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corp.,

kingpins of PC technology that have so far struggled to match the momentum in

tablets of Google Inc.'s Android software and chip designs from ARM Holdings PLC.

Which attributes may win favor with large numbers of customers, or whether any

tablet without an Apple logo can thrive, remain open questions.

'It's a very new and emerging market,' said Nicholas DiCarlo, who manages new

products for a U.S. unit of Samsung Electronics Co. 'It's way early to call any

judgments.'

Samsung is one of few companies to make measurable headway against Apple. The

South Korean company has shipped more than one million of its Galaxy Tabs, which

were launched in the U.S. in November. The device costs as little as $400 in the U.S.

with a two-year wireless data plan, or about $600 without a contract. IPads that

connect to cellular networks start at $629.

Dell executives have shown off various tablet prototypes and made upbeat comments

about the company's five-inch Streak, which was released in the summer, but

provided no concrete sales figures. The Streak costs $199 with a two-year contract;

$549 without a contract. Dell is expected to show off a new tablet design at CES, a

person familiar with the matter said.

Still, the Apple challengers know the market for tablets, which serve as a combination

e-reader, game player and Web-surfing device, is growing so quickly that they can

make money even if they can't overtake Apple. Global shipments of tablets are

expected to more than triple from 18 million units this year to about 61 million next

year, according to research firm iSuppli.

Chip makers soon will deliver one of biggest advances in years in the technology that

powers laptop and desktop computers. But how much it will benefit consumers is still

to be determined.

'I don't think anyone believes they can beat Apple, but they want to be Number Two,'

said Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall, who expects as many as 50

manufacturers to show off tablets at the CES show.

Craig Ellis, an analyst at Caris & Co. who is tracking 69 new devices under

development, says competition caused sharp price declines of some tablets in

pre-holiday sales and prices could fall even faster as more hardware hits the market.

Many manufacturers plan to use versions of Android, which helps keep prices low

because Google gives the software away. Android, like Apple, also has a growing

digital store for small computer programs, known as apps that can be downloaded

onto the devices. And Android also does some things the iPad's software doesn't, like
