Abstract
Perturbationsofstarsandblackholeshavebeenoneofthemaintopics
eofpartic-
ularimportancetoday,becauseoftheirrelevancetogravitationalwave
reviewwepresentthetheoryofquasi-normalmodesof
compactobjectsfromboththemathematicalandastrophysicalpointsof
cussionincludesperturbationsofblackholes(Schwarzschild,
Reissner-Nordstr¨om,KerrandKerr-Newman)andrelativisticstars(non-
rotatingandslowly-rotating).Thepropertiesofthevariousfamiliesof
quasi-normalmodesaredescribed,andnumericaltechniquesforcalculat-
cesses,aswellasthelimits,
ofperturbationtheoryarepresented,anditsroleintheemergingeraof
numericalrelativityandsupercomputersisdiscussed.
