Forget The iPhone 5: Now Is The Perfect Time To Buy An iPhone 4S

With prices on the iPhone 4S slashed in half, this is the perfect time to
upgrade to Apple’s previous generation of smartphone.
I’ve been agonizing over which phone to upgrade to for several months
now.
My HTC Incredible has been undergoing a long, slow, miserable decline.
Phonecalls have become so crackly as to be near-indecipherable; the screen has
been flickering; photos have dilapidated into a weird, lo-fi technicolor.
In other words, I should have put the beast down weeks ago. The problem, of
course, is that I’m indecisive. It’s a curse most of the time, but sometimes it’s
a blessing. For instance, it can prevent me making the early adopter mistake,
thereby saving me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars…
The iPhone 5 tipped me over the line. I’d contemplated waiting for the nice,
colorful new
Nokia Lumia line to hit shelves, but that’s still a ways off, and my HTC was
simply too intolerable to wait any longer.
With the iPhone 5 I saw my opportunity: the iPhone 4S price-tag had just
been slashed in half, making the phone a steal. Given the lack of really important
changes between the two models, going with the 4S was a no-brainer.
Sure, the iPhone 5 has a taller screen and 4G, but I typically use my
smartphones over a Wi-Fi connection. While the larger screen was appealing, the
fact that the larger phone was also lighter and thinner didn’t appeal to me at all.
To be quite honest, the iPhone 4S simply has better heft. It feels substantial
somehow. It would still be a poor substitute for brass knuckles, but it certainly
isn’t as feathery as many
of its competitors or the iPhone 5.
I wish it was a bit heavier, truth be told. This obsession with thin and light has
gone too far; there’s a point when too thin and too light become problematic.
The 4s isn’t much different from the iPhone 4 in terms of size and bulk, and
both phones feel just about perfect size-wise. Not too thick, not too thin, and just
about the right weight. Had the iPhone 5 maintained the nice metal border and
exact thickness of the iPhone 4S, at least your humble narrator would have been
more inclined to make the purchase.
For half the price, however, the iPhone 4S is just perfect.
This is the first iPhone I’ve owned, and the second smartphone which, I
suppose, means I’m just a baby when it comes to actually owning these things.
Compared to Android, the differences are quite striking.
iOS is much cleaner than Android. As someone who basically can’t stand OS
X, I’m pleased to report that iOS 6 is a terrific mobile operating system. The App
Store, in particular, is just far cleaner and easier to navigate than the messy
Google Play Store.
Better still, the apps available tend to be higher quality, and there are a lot
more games. I’ll have some iOS game reviews posted in the near future.
(While I remain a skeptic about mobile gaming, there are some fun mobile
games out there that deserve a closer look. And while I realize the iPhone 5 has
improved graphics capabilities over the 4S, I suspect it won’t make that much
difference over the next two
years.)
I’m sure there are newer Android phones that are far, far better than my
previous device, but I have no regrets making the leap to Apple this time around.
Maybe in two years I’ll give Windows Phone a spin. Hopefully by then the
availability of
Windows Phone apps has increased, and more games are available on
Windows devices.
Until then, Windows will remain in my PC, and iOS will remain in my phone.
