Mobile Reading for College Kids
Hi there! I'm going to tell you about this really cool chart I
saw the other day. It shows how much college students use their
phones to read stuff. I know, I know - you're probably thinking
"Reading from a phone? That sounds like zero fun!" But just wait
until you see the chart. It's actually pretty interesting!
The chart has two big sections. One part is all about how
often students read from their mobile devices for fun or for
personal reasons. The other part shows how much they use their
phones for academic reading like textbooks and class materials.
Aren't you lucky that I'm here to explain it all to you?
Okay, let's start with the "personal" reading part. This covers
things like reading news websites, e-books, social media posts
and stuff like that. According to the chart, a huge 89% of college
kids read personal content from their phones every single day!
That's almost everybody. Only a tiny 2% say they never use their
mobile for recreational reading at all. The rest are in between -
with 6% reading a few times a week and 3% doing it just once a
week.
My favorite part of the chart is seeing what types of personal
stuff students read the most on their mobiles. The top two
categories are social media (89% read this) and news/magazines
(79%). Over half (54%) also read e-books from their phones,
which sounds hard if you ask me - how do you concentrate with
so many other distractions just a tap away?
The "social media" thing doesn't surprise me one bit. We all
know college students can't get enough of Instagram, TikTok,
Twitter and whatever the hot new app is. I'll bet a lot of that
"personal reading" is just scrolling through memes all day
instead of actual reading!
Moving on to the academic reading section, this looks at
how students use mobile devices for course readings, textbooks
and other study materials. Here the numbers are a little lower,
but phones still play a big role. Around 41% of college kids
access academic content on their mobiles daily, and another 32%
do it a few times per week. Only 6% say they never use a mobile
for academic work - those must be the really old-fashioned
students!
