More and More Kids Are Using Cell Phones - Is It Good or
Bad?
Hi friends! Today I want to talk about something that's
becoming super common at my school and probably yours too.
More and more kids are getting cell phones! It seems like every
day, another classmate shows up with a brand new smartphone
from their parents. Some of them are even just in 2nd or 3rd
grade!
At first, I thought having a phone was just for calling your
parents or playing games during recess. But then I noticed lots of
my friends were doing way more things on their phones. During
class, I'd see them texting under their desks instead of paying
attention. At lunch, they'd be watching YouTube videos and
shows instead of talking to each other. And on the school bus,
everybody had their faces glued to their phones playing games
like Roblox and Fortnite. It's like phones have become this huge
distraction that kids just can't pull themselves away from.
I have to admit, part of me was really jealous of the kids with
phones. They always seemed to be enjoying themselves more
than me. The games and videos they could access looked way
more fun than the boring worksheets we had to do. Plus, having
a phone made them seem so grown up and mature. Like they
didn't need toys and could just hangout in the digital world.
But another part of me wonders if phones are actually bad
for kids my age. Every time I see a group absolutely zonked out
staring at their screens, I get worried they're going to end up
with square eyes! And I've heard phones can actually rewire your
brain and make you more antsy and unable to focus. There's
even some research saying that too much screen time fees
developmentally inappropriate for elementary schoolers.
My friend Johnny is a perfect example. He got a
hand-me-down smartphone from his older brother over winter
break. At first, he was alighting it up at every chance, even hiding
under his desk to use it during class. But then, something weird
started happening. Johnny started having more meltdowns and
was finding it really hard to pay attention. Even doing simple
things like eating lunch or getting dressed became an uphill
battle if he didn't have his phone. It was like he got addicted to
that tiny screen!
