begin?No one was sure,but most people blamed Mrs O’Leary’s cow. Mrs O’Leary went

to her barn that night to milk her cow. The cow kicked over a lamp,and the barn began

to burn. Soon,other buildings began to burn, of them were wooden buildings,

and they were very and more buildings burned. There was a very strong

wind,and the flames crossed the Chicago River and moved farther and farther

burned;banks burned;theatres,stores and prisons ns of

dollars, thousands of buildings,and hundreds of people—gone.

But Chicago did not die. Near the lake and to the south,some buildings did not

burn. It still had its railroads and people built new homes,new

city went on growing, Today,Chicago has more than three million people and hundreds

of tall buildings.

The old Water Tower did not burn in the fire,and it is still on Michigan Avenue.

And guess what stands in place of Mrs O’Leary’s barn? The Chicago Fire Academy!
