Spain is famous for its tomato festival, called La Tomatina. It happens in a small town Hanoi on the

last Wednesday of August every year. During the festival there are all kinds of activities, but the

most exciting part is the tomato fight. It takes place at the end of long celebration. You are

encouraged to throw tomatoes in the fight. There’re many stories about how the festival began. One

of the stories goes that during the 1940s, some friends started a tomato fight, while another story is

about a local band. Anyway, everyone seems to have a different story. Before the tomato fight, there

are parades (

游行

), musical bands, street parties and so on. On the day of the fight, shopkeepers

cover their windows and doors in order to keep away from the tomato fight. At the same time,

thousands of tourists and local people come to the town square together. Then large trucks (

卡车

)

full of tomatoes arrive. From the back of the large trucks, a great town band starts to throw tomatoes

at others. Then the crowds fight back, throwing the tomatoes at anything and anyone. Soon the

streets are in the sea of red tomato juice. Everyone is supposed to obey a small number of rules: You

must squash (

tomatoes.

It is usually over in less than half an hour. Everyone then sets off to the river to clear up. Sounds like

fun!

I’ve always thought my house is in the worst possible place. I live on the edge of town. My little

community of twenty-something houses is about 800 meters away from any other community.

Every night, my parents drive home along a rather lonely, forest-lined road to get home. It’s hard for

me to carpool with classmates and their parents. But yesterday, I found it is fantastic to live where I

do.

Yesterday, the whole state of New Jersey, where I live, experienced a snowstorm. When I woke up

in the morning, my backyard was a blanket of snow. Everything seemed so clean, as if nature had

decided to cover everything and started a new. As I stood by the glass door to have a look, a family

of deer galloped past my yard. It was like a scene taken out of Bambi!

But that was just the beginning. My family keeps a package of bird feed next to the porch. Every

now and then, my mom leaves some feed on the porch for birds to eat. Later that day, while I was

eating lunch, I noticed a flash of red in front of the window. Two of the most brilliant cardinals sat

on two wooden posts outside my window, pecking away at grains of feed. Their bright red coats

stood in contrast to the whiteness outside. The scene took my breath away.

When my parents came home that night, I reported to them my findings from the day.

“You know,” my mom said, “If we lived anywhere else, you wouldn’t be able to see any of this.”

She was right.

I always dreamed of living and working in a large city when I grow up. But now, I also cherish the

quiet beauty that a suburban backyard offers.

46. Why did the writer use to think his house was in the worst possible place?

A

Because it was too big.

B

Because it was too small.

C

Because it was too far away.

D

Because it was too close to a store.

47. What happened in New Jersey the day before?

A

It rained heavily in the morning

B

There was a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

C

There was a snowstorm in the whole state.

D

The sky was clear and the sun was shining.

48. How does the writer feel about where he lives now?

A

He is indifferent about where he lives.

B

He is planning to move to a larger city.

C

He thinks his house is in the worst possible place.

D

He cherishes the quiet beauty that his suburban backyard offers.

49. When did the writer realize that living in the suburbs had its benefits?

A

When it was hard for them to carpool with classmates.

B

When their parents drove home on a lonely, forest-lined road.

C

When they saw a family of deer on their street.

D

When his mom reminded him that they would not see these things if they lived in a city.

Chinese animal symbols hold amazing power in all cultures. As with all symbols, these can bring

about great positive (

积极的

) parts into our lives. By understanding their meanings, we think about

the desired (

渴望的

) part each symbol represents.

The crane is a legend (

传说

) in China for

being, the prince with feathers on earth. Next

to (

仅次于

) the phoenix (

凤凰

) , the crane is

Chinese favourite bird symbol. The crane is

the ancient symbol for long life because it

can live for a long time. In many legends, the

spirit ride on cranes, which are also said to

Crane:

take the souls (

灵魂

) of the dead people to

heaven.

This symbol means a lot of gold, making the

goldfish a popular symbol in the Chinese

culture. One of the most popular New Year’s

pictures is a child holding a large goldfish

and a flower which brings both wealth and

harmony. A goldfish embroidered (

刺绣

) on

a bag or a shirt is a sure way to bring enough

energy into your life.

This Chinese animal symbol translates into

the bird of joy. It is believed that when the

magpie nests in your house, it brings much

cause for celebration and many happy

occasions (

场合

). Those people who wish to

live a happy life in a new place will do well

to have this symbol in their lives, as it

attracts the settling (

安居

) energies into our

lives. What’s more, the magpie is a powerful

symbol to attract the happiness with marriage

and children.

A picture of a rooster stands for a wish for

advancement (

晋升

) because the rooster’s

crest (

) sounds similar to the word “

” in

Chinese. More importantly, legend has it that

the Heavenly Rooster of Dusu Mountain was

crowing (

啼叫

) loudly and making all the

roosters on earth crow along with it. This

crowing would drive away all evil spirits

away.

卡车

)

full of tomatoes arrive.

Sounds like

48. How does the writer feel about where he lives now?

A

B

He is planning to move to a larger city.

C

He thinks his house is in the worst possible place.

D

He cherishes the quiet beauty that his suburban backyard offers.

49. When did the writer realize that living in the suburbs had its benefits?

A

When it was hard for them to carpool with classmates.

D

When his mom reminded him that they would not see these things if they lived in a city.
