My Wonderful Summer Vacation
Summer vacation is the best time of the year! School is out,
the weather is warm and sunny, and there is so much fun to be
had. This past summer was one I'll never forget. I had many
exciting adventures and made lots of wonderful memories.
The summer kicked off with a big birthday party for my best
friend Lily. Her parents rented out a huge bouncy castle and had
all kinds of games, prizes, and delicious food like hamburgers,
hot dogs, pizza, and ice cream. There must have been 30 kids
there! We jumped in the bouncy castle until we were exhausted
and played fun games like musical chairs and freeze dance. Lily
got lots of cool presents too like books, toys, craft kits and
games. It was such a fun day celebrating her turning 11 years old.
A couple weeks later, my family went on our annual summer
road trip. This year we drove up to Beijing to see all the famous
sites like the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen
Square and more. I had studied a little about Beijing's history in
school, but it was amazing getting to see everything in person.
The Great Wall was definitely the highlight. It was
mindblowing seeing this massive ancient structure winding
through the mountains. We had to climb up a ton of steep steps,
but the views from the top were breathtaking. You could see the
Wall stretching out in both directions as far as the eye could see.
Our tour guide told us the Great Wall is over 21,000 km long!
That's longer than the distance across the entire Pacific Ocean.
Just imagining how much work it took to build is unbelievable.
At the Forbidden City, I was in awe of the bright yellow tiled
roofs, the ornate decorations, and the sheer size of the place –
it's said to have 9,000 rooms! Our guide explained how it was the
home of 24 emperors over almost 500 years. We also visited
Tiananmen Square which was cool getting to see the spot of so
many key moments in China's history.
In addition to the sightseeing, I loved exploring all the
different Beijing foods. My favorite was the jianbing which is kind
of like a crepe or burrito with an egg, crispy wontons, scallions,
cilantro, sauces, and either beef or chicken inside. So delicious! I
also got to try tanghulu (candied fruit on a stick), jidangao (egg
cakes), and buttery shaobing flatbreads. Yum!
