Section C
Directions: Read the following passage, Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.
Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. What you're born with isn't what you're stuck with.
B. Where the difference was observed was in connectivity.
C. Another more complicated mnemonic technique is called a mind palace.
D. Training in method of loci can physically change the way a person remembers.
E. Eating and sleeping right will lead to optimal brain function, the flow-on effect of which is a better
memory.
F. The improved memory observed after mnemonic training persists for as long as 4 months after
training concludes.
Life would be a lot sweeter if you were a memory athlete. Most of us however, are not wired
that way. But don't be discouraged: thanks to neuroplasticity, anyone can transcend their fallible
memory. _____67_____
There are a few relatively simple things a person can do to help improve their memory function.
First up, the basics: the foundation of good memory is good health. _____68_____
Then there are more deliberate approaches like practicing mnemonics. A mnemonic device is a
trick designed to make remembering things easier. So instead of remembering to buy eggs, rice,
apples and dog food, it might be easier to think of READ, which stands for rice, eggs, apples, and
dog food. This is the acrostic method.
_____69_____ Let's use the same shopping list as an example. Instead of focusing on the word
‘rice,’ this technique works by focusing on the image of rice thrown on the ground in a yard. For eggs,
picture a hen pecking at the rice, followed by a nearby tree of apple blossoms, the petals falling
around the hen, falling on a sleeping dog. Once the interconnected scene is created it’s a simple
visual to ease your way around the halls of the grocery store with no list needed. This technique,
where you base a memory around visual images, is more formally called 'method of loci'.
A recent study published in Neuron has unearthed some interesting insights about the brains of
competitive memorizers. The researchers invited 23 of the world's top 50 memory athletes to have
their brains scanned in rest states, and while performing memory tests, and matched each champion
to a control participant. Anatomically, the scans showed there was no difference in brain structure or
region size between the groups. _____70_____ And what's more, after they gave the 'naive' control
group training in the method of loci, their neural connectivity began to look more like that of the
pros.

B. There will be 25% fewer freshmen than the school had banked on.

D. Fewer students will choose the school due to its high tuition.
E. Layoffs are ‘a last option’, a spokeswoman sad.

Student Drought(缺乏) Bits Smaller Universities
As Loyola University New Orleans is getting ready for fall classes next month, the 101-year-old
university faces a crisis: (67)________ ‘ It was a pretty big hit,’ said Mare K. Manganaro, vice
president for academic affairs.
Now, along with preparing for fall courses, Loyola officials are worried about how to plug a
S9.5 million shortfall in the school’s S163 million annual budget, the result of 221 fewer freshmen
than expected.
Since last May, the 5,000-student private college has imposed a hiring freeze, reduced faculty
(员工) hours, hired outside firms to revamp its marketing and financial aid,and is setting up
early-retirement packages for some faculty. If that isn’t sufficient to fill the gap, the school may tap
its S275 million endowment (捐赠). (68)________.
Many in higher education believe this might be a trend for smaller colleges. After decades of
growth, college enrollment nationally dropped 2.3% this spring, compared with spring 2012
according to a report released by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. (69)________
The number of U.S. high-school graduates peaked at 3.4 million in 2010-2011 and is projected to fall
to 3.2 million by 2013-14, according to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
Loyola has set up numerous committees to figure out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't
happen again. School officials were shocked this year by the low fall turnout. The vice president for
enrollment management resigned abruptly in June. Loyola officials believe a reason for the decline
was a reduction in financial aid it offered to the incoming class off its S35, 504 tuition, from an
average discount of 58% last year to about 55% this fall.
‘(70)________. I think the market answered back on that’ said Mr. Manganaro.

E. Be aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author‘s point of view.
F. The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.
Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be
especially careful of information contained in advertisements. The goal of an ad is to sell you
something. Evaluate scientific statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术).
(70) Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and
inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.
Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about the health
problems will serve you well throughout your life.

Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each
sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Chefs wore white because they work with flour, but the main chef wore a black hat to show he supervised.
B. Huge investments have been made in new systems, information technology and amassing quality assurance
accreditations.
C. The greatest challenge in this respect is time.
D. Neatness can suggest efficiency but, if it is overdone, it can spill over and indicate an obsession with power.
E. Corporate clothing does have potential for further growth.
F. The last 30 years, however, have seen an increasing emphasis on their role in protecting the image of an
organization and in uniting the workforce into a homogeneous unit.
First Impressions Count
Traditionally uniforms were—and for some industries still are -- manufactured to protect the
worker. When they were first designed, it is also likely that all uniforms made symbolic sense—those
for the military, for example, were originally intended to impress and even terrify the enemy; other
uniforms denoted a hierarchy.
(67) _________. Particularly in “customer facing” industries, and especially in financial services
and retailing. From uniforms and workwear has emerged “corporate clothing”. “The people you
employ are your ambassadors,” says Peter Griffin, managing director of a major retailer in the UK.
“What they say, how they look, and how they behave is terribly important.” The result is a new way
of looking at corporate workwear. From being a simple means of identifying who is a member of the
staff, the uniform is emerging as a new channel of marketing communication.
Truly effective marketing through visual cues such as uniforms is a subtle art, however.
Wittingly or unwittingly, how we look sends all sorts of powerful subliminal messages to other
people. Dark colors give an aura of authority while lighter pastel shades suggest approachability.
Certain dress style creates a sense of conservatism, others a sense of openness to new ideas. (68)
__________.
A successful uniform needs to balance two key sets of needs. On the one hand, no uniform will
work if the staff feel uncomfortable or ugly. Giving the wearers a choice has become a key element in
the way corporate clothing is introduced and managed. On the other, it is pointless if the look doesn’t
express the business’s marketing strategy. (69)________.When it comes to human perceptions, first
impressions count. Customers will size up the way the staff look in just a few seconds» and that few
seconds will color their attitudes from then on. Those few seconds can be so important that big
companies are prepared to invest years, and millions of pounds, getting them right.
(70) ________. Some banks have yet to introduce a full corporate look; police forces are
researching a completely new look for the 21st century. And many employees now welcome a
company wardrobe. A recent survey of the staff found that 90 percent welcomed having clothing
which reflected the corporate identity.
