The Greater the Struggle, the Greater the Glory

Hi there! My name is Timmy and I'm a 5th grader. Today I

want to tell you all about how the bigger the challenge you face,

the more rewarding it feels when you finally overcome it. It's a

lesson I've learned over and over again in my young life.

I remember back in 1st grade when I was just starting to

learn how to read. At first, those funny shapes and squiggles on

the page made no sense to me at all. I would look at a book and

all the words just seemed like a jumbled mess. Reading was

really, really hard for me. I would get so frustrated trying to

sound out even the simplest words. Sometimes I would start

crying because I felt like I would never be able to read.

But my teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, was really patient and

encouraging. She worked with me one-on-one during recess to

help me practice sounding out words. Little by little, things

started clicking into place. Looking back, I realize that if reading

had come easily to me right away, I wouldn't have felt that same

amazing sense of pride and accomplishment when I finally

mastered it. The struggle made the victory that much sweeter.

A few years later, I faced another big challenge when I

decided to try out for my school's basketball team. I had never

played organized sports before, so I didn't know any of the rules

or skills. On the first day of practice, I was the worst one on the

court by far. I couldn't dribble without losing control of the ball,

my shots never went anywhere near the hoop, and I got tired

way faster than the other kids.

Game after game that first season, I rode the bench feeling

embarrassed that I was so bad at basketball. A few times I felt

like just giving up. But I kept practicing my dribbling, shooting,

and running every single day after school. Slowly but surely, I

started improving little by little. That tough season of being the

last player off the bench made my first basket, my first decent

game, my first start feel like the biggest victories in the world. If

basketball had come naturally to me from day one, those early

milestones wouldn't have meant nearly as much.

Last year I faced my biggest challenge yet - a battle for my

life against cancer. I still remember the pit in my stomach when

the doctors at the hospital told me and my parents that I had

leukemia. I was only nine years old and all of a sudden I was
