The Influences of Smartphones on College
Students

Thesis statement:Nowadays, the popularity of smart phones has a great influence on
college students.
1. Introduction
With the rapid development of economy and technology, the mobile phone industry has
changed dramatically and generated the smartphone. The advent of smartphones has dramatically
changed the way traditional communications and social contact. Nowadays, smart phones are used
widely and they are popular among young people. One of the most significant subjects for debate
currently taking place is the explosion in the use of social networking by college students. The
reason for this is that smartphones have entered college campuses and been used widely by
college students. A survey conducted by Indian students at Ball State University found that the
number of students who own a smartphone has more than doubled in three years - from 27% in
2009 to 69% in 2012 (Hingorani & Woodard, 2012). This number is expected to keep on growing in
the coming years (Abir S. Al-Harrasi & Ali H. Al-Badi, 2014).
Nowadays smartphones have several features that are comparable to an average
computer. They can also engage students in far more dynamic ways than a laptop or a tablet
computer(Hingorani&Woodard,2012).People can use phones to surf the Internet, listen to
music ,watch videos ,play games online ,update their personal micro blog, and upload their latest
pictures at any place and any time. It seems that smartphones have already become an
indispensable part in students’ daily life. Using of smartphones has a lot of impacts on college
students in many aspects, and these effects are both good and bad. The influence of smartphones
on college students is mainly reflected in networking, physical and mental health, learning and
teaching of university. These effects will lead to many serious results in their campus life.
Many studies have been carried out to investigate the impact of smartphones on college
students. Although the literature covers a wide variety of such studies, this study will focus on
single aspect, such as social networking and their learning. This paper will focus on many aspects
in which college students are influenced and analyze how does it affects them and at the same
time analyze its positivity and negativity. There has been a lot of tragedy about smartphones in
society and campus. The purpose of this paper is to hope that the use of smart phones on campus
will attract more attention.
2. Positive Impact
The widely use of smart phones brings huge positive influences to students’ life and study.
2.1 In terms of learning
In this age of information explosion,The Internet is the most important means of
acquiring knowledge. Therefore, the smart phone is one of the important tools for people to learn,
especially for college students. They can use smartphones to download application software to
learn much knowledge that they want. The software such as memorizing word and eBooks, makes
students completely get rid of the trouble with books. At the same time, with the help of internet,
students can be more convenient access to knowledge and information. For example, students can
use mobile phone reading e-books, and can use electronic dictionary to learn. We can say that
smart phones help students accumulate knowledge anytime and anywhere.
2.2 In terms of social networking
The advent of smartphones has dramatically changed the way we socialize. As the
product of new technology, smart phones have lots of communication platforms, such as QQ,
WeChat, weibo and so on. Smart phones compared to other means of communication are more
convenient and also have more privacy. This is the most important reason why smart phones
become so popular. We contact with our families, relatives and friends by writing letters or just go
to certain area to make a phone call in the past. But now, we can talk and see each other by video
and chat through the phone. In addition, communication through mobile phone does not need
direct contact, it can reduce the tension caused by face-to-face communication. What’s more, they
enable students contact more different identity of groups, so that they can make more friends, and
widen social circle.
2.3 In terms of working
Compared with computers, smartphones are more convenient and quick to work. No
matter when and where, People can process electronic documents on their smartphones.
Nowadays, mobile phones are becoming more and more important to individuals, and their role in
personal work is becoming more and more necessary.
2.4 In terms of entertainment life
Smart phones have powerful entertainment capabilities. They can provide powerful
entertainment functions. They have changed the way we entertain. Now, we can listen to music,
watch video, and even play games on the phone when we feel bored. With so many functions,
smart phones make the students’ spare life become richer.
3. Negative Impact
The negative impact of smartphones is also self-evident.
3.1 Learning influence
Smartphone is a double-edged sword. Many college students are addicted to the
entertainment and social functions of smartphones. And thus they neglect their studies. Many of
the students' performance declines are linked to smartphones. Tt has become a recognized campus
and social problem.
3.2 Human communication influence
The advent of smartphones has made it more common for people to communicate
on the Internet. People tend to make their own comments online, but in reality they are very quiet.
So many people become more isolated and introverted. The distance between people is getting
bigger and bigger by smartphones.
3.3 Physical and psychological health influence
As we all know, cell phones can do great harm to people, especially smart phones.
According to research, the radiation of the smartphone is harmful to the human body(Sunjing &
Weizuoyu 2017). In addition, the use of cell phones for a long time can cause great harm to people's
eyes. This is one of the reasons why many college students wear glasses nowadays. Smart phones
have exacerbated students' comparison mentality, leading to the prevalence of online fraud. The
survey," do you think students will compare phones for mobile phones?” which was investigated,
and half of the students believed that the comparison mentality exists (Shaozhihuai 2016).
3.4 Teaching in college influence
Many college students play their mobile phones in class, leading to the failure of
normal teaching, which is reflected by many teachers in colleges and universities. This behavior
seriously affects classroom order and teaching environment (Liuyang 2014).
4. Research Methodology
This study uses a questionnaire to explore the influence of using smartphones on
college students. Formally, the research aims to provide answers to the following questions:
1. What is the main purpose of using smartphones while at college/university?
2. Does the use of social networking using smartphones cause information overload in such a way
that it becomes nearly impossible to process it?
3. How do students filter the information they find on smartphones?
4. What is the impact (both negative and positive) of using smartphones while at college/university?
5. Findings and Discussion
Through the online survey, it was analysed to investigate the trends of the college
students with regard to the use of their smartphones while they are at college.
College students ‘main purpose of using smartphones is communication and
entertainment. And few of students warry about their security of information. Many college
students think that the advantages of cell phones outweigh the disadvantages

Smartphones are integrated into every aspect of our college students' lives. College
students should be aware of the role of mobile phones that it just a tool. The use of smart phones
has both advantages and disadvantages, and university students should identify it.
