Cup” National English Speaking Competition Regional Final, Hunan Province, China.

(F) Thank you . It’s a great honor to have the chance to co-host this
competition. I’ve heard of the “21st Century Cup” competition for a long time.
(M) Me too. I am really honored to stand on this stage as a host. The “21st Century
Cup” National English Speaking Competition was initiated by China Daily in 1996, to
promote the improvement of Chinese English language learners’ communicative
abilities in English. It serves as China’s qualifying contest for the International Public
Speaking Competition to be held each year in London.
(F) The finals of the “21st Century Cup” have been held in major Chinese cities
including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Wuhan, Macao and
Hong Kong. It has proved to be an extremely popular event among college students
all over the country.
(M) This year’s competition is sponsored by China Daily, and organized by 21st
Century English Newspapers. China Daily, being one of the most authoritative

providers of news and views in China, shoulders the responsibility of increasing the
exchange between China and the rest of the world by improving Chinese English
abilities.
(F) Its subsidiary newspaper group, 21st Century English Newspapers, has been
committed to promoting English language teaching in China through various ways. It
publishes newspapers including 21st Century Weekly, provides online service on
and holds activities such as this speaking competition.
(M) Today, we would also like to give special thanks to NOKIA and SUNING.
(F) Today’s competition is the Regional Final in Hunan Province, China. Over the
past seven months, quite a number of students in Hunan Province have participated in
preliminary contests, either online or on campus, and telephone interviews. Today’s
contestants are the winners of the contestants mentioned above.
(M) Altogether there are 15 contestants today. The awarding ceremony will be held
around 5 o’clock this afternoon.
(Rules of competition)
(F) Now let’s go over the rules of today’s competition. The contestants will be given 3
minutes to present a prepared speech, 2 minutes to present an impromptu speech,
followed by a 2-minute question-and-answer session.
(M) The theme for today’s prepared speech is: “Growing up with the Internet: Who
are we — the Net Generation?”. The Internet gained a public face in the 1990s, which
has made great influence on the contemporary college students, or the Post-90s
generation. Some people even say this generation is marked by the “Internet Age”.
Today we look forward to hearing contestants’ thoughts on this theme and get to
know more about how these young people name themselves.

(F) The topic of the impromptu speech will be read to the contestants after their
prepared speeches.
(M) The highest possible score for each contest is 100 points. The points are divided
into three parts: 30 points for the prepared speech, 40 points for impromptu speech
and 30 points for the question-and-answer session. The contestants’ performances will
be measured on content, language and the way they deliver the speech.
(Judges)
(F) Ladies and Gentlemen, today’s competition will be mediated by a panel of 5
judges. The panel includes experts on English language teaching and in media and
communication. 3 judges will be responsible for scoring for today’s competition. Let’s

(F) Prof. Deng Yingling, Vice Dean of School of Foreign Languages, Hunan Normal
University;
(M) Prof. Ge Lingling, Dean of School of Foreign Languages, University of South
China;

Technology
(M) Also on the panel are 2 question masters who will be responsible for raising
questions for today’s contestants. They are:
