Reading Review
Today, I want to say something about The Man Without a
Temperament.
It was a short story about a couple, though I don’t know how long have
they been married. The man was apparently a gentle man. And I think he
was a model husband though he seemed did not like his wife. However,
the wife liked her husband deeply. We can see from P706. “Won’t you
bring the other up closer? It’s such miles away.” But he did not move. “I
shan’t want it, I know I shan’t.” “You’d better have it.” The wife hoped
that her husband can stay with her all the time, but his husband alway try
to find opportunities to leave her to another place. In P709, when they
walked together and the wife felt tired. Tough the wife said that “I want
you to go.” I believe that she did not really want her husband to leave her.
On the one hand, she loved her husband so much, on the other hand, she
was afraid that her husband would leave her forever and won’t come back
because of her illness. As we all know, what women did are not always
what they thought. As for the husband, some said that he was from lower
class and though he married a disabled woman because of some material
causes, and that maybe it was also the reason for him not to get divorced.
However, after all, it’s rather difficult for a man to look after a patient for
such a long time. But the husband insisted on looking after his wife
without temperament. It was amazing. Some said that the man was
actually a man with temperament. I agree with that, But at least he won’t
show his anger and shout at his disabled wife. So I still respect the man.
Now I want to say something about the ending. “He bends down. He
kisses her. He tucks her in, he smoothes the pillow. ” It was not every
man can do, he must be really considerate. Some said that the man had a
epiphany at that time. I agreed. Earlier the man was always doubt their
marriage, but now he didn’t doubt it. I still think that the man don’t like
his wife, but he did not want to leave his wife any more because he
realized that it was his duty and responsible to protect her.
At last, I want to say some other people appeared in this short story.
For example, the Honey-moon couple and so on. They were not the main
characters, but the author used many extra words to describe them. The
Honey-moon Couple was a sharp contrast to the main couple. Maybe
what the Honey-moon Couple did make the man more disappointed about
his own marriage. What’s more, the servant girl did not afraid of the man.
We can see from P707. The servant girl’s voice at its loudest and shrillest
followed him along the corridor. Maybe from what the girl did, we can
learn that the man was not from upper-middle class, maybe he was from
the same class as the servant girl. As for the American woman and the
two Topknots, I’m still not sure why the author mentioned them many
times. So I still need to read the novel for another time.
