“Did you forget your name?” someone asked me at a networking event

a few years ago after it took me almost a minute to say it. “No, I stutter (

),” I politely replied. This is what I have to face every day. So I wasn’t

upset.

I’ve stuttered since I was three years old. In my case, stuttering usually

shows itself in terms of repetitions: “My name is S-S-S-S-Samuel.” Instead

of being unhappy about the experience at the networking event, I felt proud

that I’d brought up my stuttering. But I wasn’t always so forthcoming

about it. When I was growing up, I hardly spoke. Whether it was at school

or at work, I avoided most social situations out of embarrassment and fear

of being laughed at.

英语试题 第6页(共30页)

But things became different after I attended the National Stuttering

Association meeting, the largest gathering of stutterers worldwide. It was

the first time I’d met so many other professionals who stutter—lawyers,

doctors, actors, etc.—all in one place. To my surprise, everyone spoke

without fear or embarrassment. In fact, they were proud. Stuttering was

celebrated. That was when I first realized that stuttering isn’t something to

be ashamed of. It’s just something I happen to do, and that’s okay.

The change didn’t happen overnight, but over the last eight years, I’ve

started to bring up my stuttering more. I’ve talked to friends and

co-workers. I’ve mentioned it in every organization I’ve worked for. And

when I talk about it with others, it encourages them to open up, too. My

stuttering has allowed me to connect with others and develop stronger ties

with them.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s still frustrating when I know exactly what I

want to say but I just can’t seem to get the words out of my mouth. But

today I don’t let my stuttering hold me back. Instead, I let it push me

forward and help me make progress.

24

By saying “I wasn’t always so forthcoming about it”, the author means

________.

A

he was once an outgoing person

B

he regretted talking about his stuttering

C

he used to avoid opening up about his stuttering

D

he was unwilling to receive comments on his speech

英语试题 第7页(共30页)

25

How did the National Stuttering Association meeting influence the

author?

A

He began to make friends with stutterers.

B

He learned some skills at stopping stuttering there.

C

It made him focus his attention on good comments.

D

The confident stutterers changed his attitude to stuttering.

26

What happened after the author started bringing up his stuttering?

A

He has improved his work performance.

B

He became popular among his co-workers.

C

He learned to express himself with simple words.

D

He was able to build a close relationship with others.

27

Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A

The power of accepting my stutter

B

The challenge from normal people

C

Special ways to live with stuttering

D

My experience of overcoming stuttering

C

In an effort to stop poaching and protect endangered species, people are

using technology previously created to discover stars. Claire Burke, who

led the project, says the application of the star-hunting tech has so far paid

off big for conservation. “Since animals and humans in thermal imagery

knowledge of ecologists to develop a system to find the animals or

poachers automatically,” she said in a statement.

In addition to species identification, the software can also provide an

overview of health. Burke said that diseased or injured animals give off a

different thermal imagery than the healthy ones. “The real advantage this

gives you is that if you know how many animals you have and where they

are and what kind of health they are in, then you can work out a good

conservation strategy for looking after them,” she said.

The following is a post written by Burke on Twitter: More animals for

the thermal imagery library. Thanks to Chester Zoo Science @ScienceatCZ

for letting us observe their fantastic creatures. Images are giraffes, Indian

elephants, and fruit bats.—Claire Burke (@CBurkeSci) October 27.

To train the software on a wide variety of heat signatures from different

species, the team of researchers spent time collecting thermal imagery of

animals. Their first field trial to detect Riverine rabbits, one of the most

endangered mammals in the world (with only 500 living adults left in the

wild), was a complete success. “The rabbits are very small, so we flew the

drone (

无人机

) quite low to the ground at a height of 20 meters (65 feet).

Although this limited the area we could cover with the drone, we managed

to see the rabbit five times,” said Burke. “Given that there have only been

about 1,000 times people have seen Riverine rabbits, it was a real success.”

28

What can people decide by observing the thermal imagery of the

C

There are more of them than people thought.

D

It is easier to find them using the high-tech tool.

30

What is the text mainly about?

A

Technology has helped a lot in helping the endangered animals.

B

Researchers use stargazing tools to protect endangered species.

C

What we should do to protect the endangered animals.

D

Scientists are working hard to protect the environment.

D

For centuries, artists usually give people an impression: they are the

“Starving Artists”, struggling to make ends meet. Henri Murger proved that.

He was born the son of a doorman in France. Living in Paris, he was

surrounded by creative geniuses and dreamed of joining them, but he grew

upset with his failure to earn money.

In 1847, Murger published a book. It’s a collection of stories about

poverty, which launched the concept of the “Starving Artists” into the

public’s understanding as the model for a creative life. To this day, it

endures as the model for what we imagine when we think of the word

“artist”.

英语试题 第10页(共30页)

Today, what we forget is that the story of the “Starving Artist” is a myth.

In fact, it is really just an imaginary story. Due to the power of this myth in

Murger’s book, many of us just want to become lawyers instead of writers,

bankers instead of poets, and doctors instead of painters. Nobody wants to

struggle ultimately. Thus, we just keep our passion a hobby instead of a

career.

In the early Renaissance, artists did not have reputations for being

diligent workers. They were considered manual laborers, receiving small

amounts of money for their work. Michelangelo Buonarroti, however,

changed all that. He was not only a master sculptor but also the most

affluent artist of his time. After him, every artist began to see a “new

pattern of doing things”, in the words of Bill Wallace, professor of art

history at Washington University. Michelangelo established the idea that an

artist could become a new figure in society and have a higher social status,

and also that he could become financially successful.

Michelangelo did not need to starve for his creations, and neither do

you. When we hear the tales and warnings about what it means to be an

artist, we must understand an important truth—you don’t have to starve

and you might as well make a living from your creative talents.

31

What concept is presented in Henri Murger’s story collection?

A

Artists are not easy to become well known.

B

Being creative is not a really good thing sometimes.

C

Artists usually experience financial difficulties.

英语试题 第11页(共30页)

D

One has to be a very creative genius to be an artist.

32

What is described in paragraph 3?

A

People’s imagination of artists.

B

People’s various comments on being artists.

C

Murger’s understanding of artists.

D

The influence of Murger’s books.

33

What does the underlined word “affluent” in paragraph 4 probably

mean?

A

Wealthy. B

Controversial.C

Starving. D

Humorous.

34

What’s the main purpose of the last paragraph?

A

To ask people to read more tales.

B

To advise people to make use of their talents.

C

To encourage people to lead a rich life.

D

To tell successful artists an important truth.

sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions, afraid that

once they lose control they’ll never get it back.”___36___ After we cry, the

feelings that caused the tears often disappear.

Sometimes people become much stressed and can’t cry. Whatever

emotion they are feeling—shock, anger, fear, or sadness—is being held

back.

But everyone has the need to cry. Psychologist Vera Diamond explains

that her treatment often consists of giving people permission to cry.

___37___Patients practice crying just to become used to expressing

emotions. She suggests safe, private places to cry, like under the bedcovers

or in the car. Crying is a way of reducing tension, but people don’t like it

when others cry because it makes them tense.___38___ And they’ll do just

about anything to make you stop.

In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It’s good

not to cry during a tense business discussion.___39___You should also act

out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will

help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “Once your tears have taken away

the stress, you can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the

problem.”

Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. If you find yourself near someone

crying, deal with it. And never be afraid to cry yourself.

27

Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

knowledge of ecologists to develop a system to find the animals or

poachers automatically,” she said in a statement.

31

A

Artists are not easy to become well known.

feelings that caused the tears often disappear.

Sometimes people become much stressed and can’t cry. Whatever

emotion they are feeling—shock, anger, fear, or sadness—is being held

But everyone has the need to cry. Psychologist Vera Diamond explains

that her treatment often consists of giving people permission to cry.
