It was late—an unrecognized and slow hour.In front of me was a large dog, showing hisjaws

so hard that his teeth gave a loud sound with each bark. His eyes were locked on me,desperate for

the toy in my hand. But he wasn't playing-he was feeling uneasy.

As I cautiously held my ground, his bark changed to a shout, then he gave a short

andfrightening roar. That was when my unease gave way to something far more primitive:fear.

This was no ordinary dog.Dyngo,ten-year-old,had been trained to push his six-stonebody

toward enemies, locking his jaws around them. This dog had saved thousands of lives. Now he

was in my flat in Washington DC.Just 72 hours earlier,I had travelled across thecountry to get

Dyngo back from Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix,Arizona,so that he could live out his

remaining years with me.

That first night,May 9,2016,after we'd settled into my hotel room,Dyngo sat on thebed

waiting for me.As I was gradually sleeping,I felt his body moving,and I smiled:Dyngo is a dog

who dreams. The next morning, when I came out from the bathroom after ashower,it was like

stepping into a hen house massacre(屠宰场):feathers floated in the air.In the middle of the bed

was Dyngo, panting over a pile of torn-pieces pillows.

On the flight home,Dyngo was allowed to sit at my feet in the broad first row,but hesoon

had bouts of vomiting(呕吐)in between his attempts to tear the blanket I'd broughthim. The pilot

announced Dyngo's military status, inspiring applause from the whole cabin. When we reached

my flat,we both collapsed from exhaustion. It would be our last bit ofshared peace for many

months.

24.Why did the author say Dyngo was no ordinary dog?

A.Because it was a large and fierce dog.

B.Because it could live with anyone peacefully.

C.Because it was once a trained military dog.

D.Because it had saved thousands of lives in Washington DC.

25.What can we conclude from Paragraph 4?

A.Dreaming is an abnormal behavior for Dyngo.

B.Dyngo enjoys tearing things up like other dogs.

C.Dyngo always prepares to wait for his owner after a shower.

D.Panting over a pillow is Dyngo's most favorite activity.

26.How was their flight home according to the passage?

A.It was tiring but inspiring that Dyngo received passengers'recognition.

B.It was disappointing because everyone was frightened by Dyngo.

第 4 页 共 16 页

C.It was annoyed that Dyngo fell ill on board unexpectedly.

D.It was peaceful and smooth without any bothers.

27.Where is this text most likely from?

A.A news report. B.A guidebook.

C.A research paper. D.A magazine.

SWAP has attracted those under 25s,the generation whose employment prospects havebeen

hit hardest by the pandemic.“You might assume young people would be embarrassedwith the idea

of washing residents. But,once they start the project, they rarely drop out,”says Hanash. As well

as transforming the chances of those seeking work, the projectbenefits employers, too.Aside from

Providing food for the world's growing population relies heavily on the use of nitrogen(氮)

-containing industrial fertilizers. Some 110 million tons of nitrogen are required to keepglobal

crop production annually, according to the U.N.'s Food and AgricultureOrganization.Nitrogen

fertilizer is typically produced by changing nitrogen from the air intoammonia(氨),a form of

nitrogen that can be used by plants. However,it is also an energy-cost process:It accounts for 1

to 2 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.Furthermore, industrial fertilizers are too

expensive for smallholder farmers in many countries, leading tostrongly decreased production and

increased pressure on natural lands.

To develop a solution, researchers are trying nature's own approach to making

nitrogenfertilizer.Whereas most crops such as corn and other cereals rely on inorganic

nitrogenfrom the soil, legume plants(豆科植物)such as soy and beans have maintained a clever

wayto produce their own.The roots of legumes interact with soil bacteria, leading to

bacterialcolonization of the root and formation of organs called nodules(根瘤).Within

thesestructures, the plant provides sugars to sustain the bacteria and profits from the

bacteria'sability to stabilize nitrogen—that is,to change nitrogen into ammonia.Thus,through

thisancient interaction with soil bacteria, legumes are independent of modern nitrogenfertilizers.

Researchers have shown that the formation of the nodules involves close

communicationbetween soil bacteria and legume roots. This knowledge has inspired exciting new

approachesto engineering nitrogen fix into nonlegume plants. For example, scientists are piloting

theroots of cereals to engage.in interaction with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and following

thecommunication between legumes and bacteria to guide the process by which the bacteria

cancolonize plant roots. In this approach, soil bacteria are taught to produce a key enzyme(酶)

that changes nitrogen from the air into ammonia.

With governments and private foundations recently providing strong support forresearch and

development in the area of engineering nitrogen fixation, crops that use thepower of nature might

soon become a key element of a more sustainable food production.

32.What can be implied about the nitrogen fertilizer according to Paragraph 1?

A.It loses preference of smallholder farmers due to poor quality.

B.It does no harm to the environment.

C.It is gained directly from the land.

D.It is universally used to help crops grow.

33.What is the natural order of legume plants producing nitrogen fertilizer?

a.The formation of nodules.

b.The bacteria's stability of nitrogen.

c.The root's being colonized by the bacteria.

第 6 页 共 16 页

d.The provision of sugar to sustain the bacteria.

e.The interaction of the roots of legumes with soil bacteria.

A.abecd B.ecadb C.ceadb D.daecb

34.What does the -underlined word “piloting” in Paragraph 3 most nearly mean?

A.persuading B.tricking C.guiding D.erasing

35.What attitude does the author hold to the natural nitrogen production?

A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Disapproved. D.Unconcerned.

It would be our last bit ofshared peace for many

months.

When Diane Hall, who is in her 50s,had her first meeting with her local trainingprovider,

Embark Learning,last autumn,her self-esteem had beendestroyed.Businessdevelopment manager

Safwan Hanash remembers:“She was nervous,and wanted towithdraw,saying:‘I can't do it.I

can't do it.’” Yet,just three months on,Hall hasattained her first qualifications since leaving

school,passing a job interview smoothly,andnow works in a care home,helping keep residents

safe during Covid-19.

Hall is one of many people to have rescued a job through the UK government's Sector-based

Work Academy Programme(SWAP),which has helped more than 40,000 people

intowork-experience placements(安置).The project, part of the £280bn Plan for Jobs packageto

promote economy recovery from Covid-19,gives jobseekers receiving unemploymentbenefits a

chance to experience work in industries such as care, construction.

During pre-employment training—which can be tailored to the needs of the businesssector in

which the candidate will work.Trainees develop the skills they'll need in theworkplace, gain

qualifications and learn how to deal with job interviews. The next stage isthe work placement,

where candidates acquire hands-on experience.

SWAP has attracted those under 25s,the generation whose employment prospects havebeen

hit hardest by the pandemic.“You might assume young people would be embarrassedwith the idea

of washing residents. But,once they start the project, they rarely drop out,”says Hanash. As well

as transforming the chances of those seeking work, the projectbenefits employers, too.Aside from

providing trained recruits,it improves company cultureby encouraging staff diversity and social

mobility.

There's no cost to the business because the UK government funds placements. As

forcandidates, they continue to receive benefits during a placement and have travel andchildcare

costs paid.

28.What do we know about Diane Hall?

A.She received pre-employment training and is working in a care home.

B.She has obtained her first job since leaving school because of SWAP.

C.She was very confident when she first met her local training provider.

D.She struggled to pass the job interview with the help of the interviewer.

29.Why did the UK government start the programme SWAP?

A.To offer the unemployed opportunities to select favorite jobs.

B.To help people without working certifications.

C.To boost economy recovery from Covid-19.

D.To give jobseekers chances to work in hospital.

30.What can we infer about young people under 25s according to Hanash?

A.They were least influenced by the pandemic.
