A dog found shot in the head and face with a pellet (小弹丸) gun, stuffed （塞）in a garbage

“The last 24 hours has been overwhelming （影响极大的）for me,” Augustyn wrote on the

BEIJING - For hundreds of millions of Chinese soccer fans including President Xi Jinping,

hosting a World Cup is the most common wish. But an agreement is yet to be reached on when to

lodge （提出）a bid.

In 2010, then Chinese soccer chief Wei Di proposed to bid for the 2026 World Cup but the

idea was dropped due to lack of government support.

But after an "overall soccer reform plan" was approved on Friday by China's central reform

eliminated after the group stage even if China qualify for the World Cup finals as the host country.

So what's the difference (from not bidding)?" a fan wrote in his blog.

Gregorio Manzano, head coach of Chinese Super League side Beijing Guo'an, had a

different opinion. "China should not wait any longer to bid for the World Cup. Hosting a World

Cup will be a good chance to improve Chinese soccer," said Manzano, who had been successful in

Spanish clubs including Malloca and Atletico Madrid.

"You should not care about win or lose, the most important thing is participating. Spain

hosted the 1982 World Cup and didn't win the trophy, but that experience boosted the development

of their league and cultivation of talents," added the 58-year-old Spaniard.

Song, Jilin sports head, also criticized the results-oriented mentality. "We should not be

obsessed with the results any more. It will add to the burden on the team," he said.

Do you think you are more intelligent than your parents and grandparents? According to

James Flynn, a professor at a New Zealand university, you are! Over the course of the last century,

people’s IQ test scores have gotten steadily higher --- on average, three points higher each decade.

This improvement is known as the “Flynn effect”, and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge. Flynn believes

that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment, but the

improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity （遗传）.

So what has occurred in the 20th century to help people achieve higher scores?

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that the

improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general and the learning of

test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test. Others have pointed to better

nutrition. Babies now are born larger, healthier, and with more brain development than in the past.

Another suggested explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging

children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information,

which improves their problem-solving skills.

Flynn has limited the possible explanations after carefully examining test data and

discovering that the improvement in scores has taken place in only certain parts of the IQ test.

Test-takers are not doing better on the maths or vocabulary sections of the test; they are doing

better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test

shows a set of shapes, and test-takers must find the patterns and connections between them.

According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our

to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or

hemisphere. In female brain, they found more activity and connections between the right and left

sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason” The right hemisphere

is known as the “creative” side.

Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She

says when women are asked to do something difficult they might use different parts of the brain.

Men, she adds, generally use just one side of the brain.

As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection

between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might

include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with reason and the part connected with

sensitivity when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.

W: There’s a group of guys who make the unhealthy meals they can

possibly cook. Everything has bacon on it. Most things are fried, and

there is a ton of cheese on everything. We’re taking in tens of thousands

of calories in one meal! In this show, the main guy introduces the meal,

and then you see them shopping for the ingredients. You watch them cook

everything. And at the end, they all eat it with their friends!

W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?

M: Sure. What’s up?

W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.

M: Oh, is everything all right?

W: Yes, of course. It’s not like he’s sick or anything. I give him medicine

every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn’t get any diseases

from insects or other dogs.

M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.

W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy

your dog’s medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost

dropped dead right there!

M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices

that are set by the campanies that make them. You can usually find

discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.

W: Well, that’s not a huge help for something that’s two hundred dollars

per year! Isn’t there any other way?

M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in

other countries where the prices are lower.

This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the

one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is

spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected.

Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood

by six o’clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to

leave this area immediately.

Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston

to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to

drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car,

but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that

the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o’clock today. You have

plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings

together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as

possible.
