My Treasured Cultural Inheritance
Hello everyone! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old.
Today I want to talk to you about something very important to
me - my cultural heritage. You see, I come from a family with
deep roots in traditional Chinese culture. My grandparents have
taught me so much about our rich history, customs, and values.
And I've learned that it's my responsibility to carry this precious
inheritance forward into the future.
But what exactly is cultural heritage? It's all the amazing
things that get passed down from our ancestors - the stories,
arts, foods, festivals, beliefs, and ways of life that make us who
we are. For me, it's things like the lively lion dances during
Chinese New Year, the mouthwatering dumplings my grandma
makes, and the ancient fables about heroic warriors and mythical
creatures.
My parents always say our traditions give us a strong sense
of identity and connection to our past. They make me feel proud
of where I came from and excited to learn more. Like how the
dragon is such a powerful symbol in our culture, representing
strength, good luck, and prosperity. Or the deep philosophical
teachings of Confucius about respect, harmony, and moral
righteousness. Incredible!
At the same time, my parents remind me that cultural
heritage isn't just about preserving the old ways exactly as they
were. It's also about adapting them creatively so they can live on
in modern times. They call this "cultural innovation." Pretty cool,
right?
For example, my aunt is an amazing artist who paints
traditional Chinese landscapes. But she adds her own unique
contemporary twist by using super bright, bold colors. And my
uncle is a renowned chef who takes classic Chinese dishes and
gives them a fun fusion twist - like Peking duck burritos! How
awesome is that?
Even some of my hobbies connect me to my heritage while
letting me innovate too. I love reading classic tales from Journey
to the West and then drawing my own funny comic versions with
the characters. And in my kung fu classes, we learn the ancient
martial art moves but also get to combine them with cool
acrobatic flips and choreographed fight scenes. Mixing the old
and new is so much fun!
But you know, preserving cultural heritage for future
generations isn't just about arts, foods, and customs. It's also
about holding onto the timeless values that have guided our
people for centuries. Things like showing respect to our elders,
working hard, staying humble, and valuing education. These core
principles will always be important, no matter how much the
world changes around us.
My grandparents especially stress the value of filial piety -
honoring and caring for one's parents and ancestors. They teach
me that I have a duty to my family, both past and future, to
uphold our customs with dignity. But they also say I can give
those customs new life by adding my own creative flair.
For example, on Qingming Festival, the traditional
tomb-sweeping day, we always take fresh flowers, herbs, and
food to visit and tidy our ancestor's graves. Well, a few years ago,
I started including my own painted rock designs and poetry
notes to leave on the graves as well. It was my way of connecting
to my roots while also marking the occasion more personally.
And you know what? My grandparents loved my innovative twist
on the tradition!
See, that's the beauty of cultural heritage. It gives you a
strong foundation to stand on, passed down lovingly from your
ancestors. But it's not meant to remain static and unchanging.
Quite the opposite! It's meant to be celebrated, re-imagined and
added to by each new generation. That's how a living heritage
grows richer and more vibrant over time.
So as the future inheritors of this infinite cultural treasure, we
kids have an important job to do. We need to soak up the
profound traditions and wisdom of the past. Learn them, cherish
them, understand why they mattered so much. And then? We
need to make them our own. Blend them with our youthful
creativity, experiences, and modern perspectives. Only then can
our heritage truly live on and continue inspiring people for
generations to come.
I feel so grateful to have such an amazing cultural
inheritance. And I'm committed to carrying it forward by
celebrating it, adding my own stamp, and passing it down one
day to my own children and grandchildren. Because in the end,
the greatest innovations come from combining the old with the
new. Honoring the past, while also embracing the future.
Thank you all for listening! I'll leave you with one of my
favorite quotations about cultural legacy. It's from the ancient
philosopher Lao Tzu: "The farther behind I leave the past, the
closer I am toward my future." Pretty wise words for us all to live
by as we strive to innovate within the traditions that shape us.
