The Wonderful World of the Forbidden City
Have you ever dreamed of traveling back in time to an era of
emperors, empresses, and royal court life? Well, let me tell you
about the most amazing place that can make that dream come
true – the Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the
Forbidden City!
Last summer, my parents surprised me by signing me up to
be a junior volunteer at this incredible museum. At first, I was a
bit nervous about spending my summer vacation working, but
boy was I in for an awesome adventure!
On my first day, I got to put on a traditional Chinese costume
called a hanfu. With its vibrant colors and elegant designs, I felt
like a young prince strutting through the palace grounds. The
volunteer coordinators were so friendly and made me feel right
at home.
As I explored the Forbidden City with my new volunteering
buddies, it was like being transported to ancient China. This
massive complex of over 9,000 rooms was the home of 24
emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties, spanning nearly
500 years of history!
One of my favorite spots was the Gate of Supreme Harmony,
an imposing entrance guarded by huge stone lions. Our guide
told us that only the emperor could walk through this gate – how
cool is that? I couldn't resist doing a regal wave like I was the
ruler of all China!
Next, we visited the lavish living quarters where the
emperors and their families resided. The intricately carved
wooden beams, manicured gardens, and glittering throne rooms
blew my mind. I couldn't imagine how many servants it took to
maintain such an opulent lifestyle.
Speaking of servants, we got to see their living quarters too.
Even though they worked incredibly hard, their rooms were tiny
and basic compared to the emperor's grand palaces. It made me
appreciate how lucky we are today to have comfortable homes
and weekends off!
But the most mind-boggling area was the Treasure Gallery,
housing thousands upon thousands of imperial artifacts made
from jade, gold, silver, and precious gems. From intricately
carved seals to ornate ceremonial robes, each item was a
dazzling work of art. My eyes couldn't get enough of all that
glittering splendor!
As junior volunteers, we had all sorts of duties around the
museum grounds. We greeted visitors with warm smiles, handed
out maps and souvenirs, and even performed some traditional
dances and songs. Whenever I donned my hanfu costume and
spun around with the bright red silk sleeves swirling, I felt like a
real-life prince or princess!
My favorite part was sharing fun facts and stories about the
Forbidden City's history with curious visitors from around the
world. Did you know that the famous Qianlong Emperor had
over 20,000 opera troupes perform for him during his reign? Or
that each roof tile was precisely placed and designed as part of
an intricate numerical system? The more I learned, the more
fascinated I became with the ingenuity and grandiose ambitions
of China's ancient rulers.
The summer flew by way too fast, but my time as a junior
volunteer created memories that will last forever. I bonded with
new friends who shared my passion for history and culture. I
developed a deep appreciation for the Chinese arts, traditions,
and architectural marvels of the past. And most importantly, I
caught a tantalizing glimpse into the dazzling world of emperors,
a life of unimaginable luxury and privilege that very few humans
have ever experienced.
While the Forbidden City no longer houses royalty, it
remains a living museum brimming with secrets, stories, and
invaluable treasures waiting to be discovered. If you ever get the
chance to volunteer here, I cannot recommend it enough! Put on
those royal robes, walk those storied grounds, and let the magic
of ancient Chinese civilization enchant you. The adventure of a
lifetime awaits in the Forbidden City!
