Helen: Hello. Welcome to another BBC Learning English programme. I’m Helen.

Feifei: 我是冯菲菲，大家好。 欢迎收听英国问答 Ask About Britain, 我们在这个节目中专门回

Helen: And our conversation today is about dictionaries.

Feifei: Dictionaries 字典，词典。一位来自杭州的听友有收集字典的爱好。

Helen: The question goes: Hello, I'm a student in Hangzhou. I have a zest for

collecting all kinds of dictionaries. I want to learn what dictionaries British

people use and what is the most popular.

Feifei: 英国人平时会用什么样的字典或者词典？ Helen, do you have any ideas?

Helen: Well, I have a few dictionaries of my own, but I’m not sure what others might

have.

Feifei: 先让我们来听听教学专家 Catherine Chapman 平时用些什么样的字典吧。

Well, we have a few dictionaries that I use. Sometimes I just use a normal learner

dictionary, when I need definitions of words. Other times I use specialist dictionaries

like, for example, a collocations dictionary, that’s a type of dictionary which shows which

words go together.

Helen: Catherine says that she uses a learner dictionary for definitions of words.

Feifei: Learner dictionary 专门为学生设计的学习字典，这是平时需要查单词意思的时候会常用

到的。

Helen: Other times, Catherine would use specialist dictionaries like a collocations

dictionary.

Feifei: 碰到特殊需要的时候， Catherine 会用专科词典，比如 collocation dictionary, 也就是

搭配词典，看看词汇可以怎样搭配。

Helen: I’m interested to know why Catherine thinks learner dictionaries are good for

everyone, not just for learners.

Well, I think a good learner dictionary is really important, because a learner dictionary

will tell you the part of the speech, whether the word’s a noun, a verb, an adjective. It

will also tell you the grammar of a word, in the sense of if it’s a verb does it have to take

an object or not.

Feifei: Catherine 介绍了使用学生词典的好处，那就是除了能找到单词的解释之外，我们还能学

到单词的运用方法。

Helen: That’s right. A learner dictionary will tell us whether it’s a noun, verb or

adjective.

Feifei: 比如一个单词是名词 noun, 动词 verb 还是形容词 adjective, 我们还能学到这个词的语

法。

Helen: Not all native speakers are good with grammar, so a dictionary with

suggestions of correct grammar is helpful to everyone.

It’ll tell you lots of idioms and phrasal verbs that go with a particular word, and some

dictionaries will actually highlight words which are very common in English, so that you

know if it’s an essential word that you have to know or whether it’s a word that you are

not going to use that often.

Feifei: 好的学生词典里会包括每个单词其相关的成语 idioms 和 短语动词 phrasal verbs 还有

它们的用法。

Helen: We use a lot of idioms and phrasal verbs in day-to-day conversations, and

sometimes we can get them mixed up.

Feifei: 就是因为成语和短语动词在英语里经常出现，所以词典里有好的解释也就非常实用了。

Helen: Catherine also says that some dictionaries will highlight words which are

common in English, so if you see them you’ll know it’s important to learn

these words.

Feifei: 有些词典会把常用单词画出来 highlight, 这样更方便我们的使用。

Helen: Nicola works for a magazine and she often uses dictionaries to check her

writing.

We use Collins, Collins is very well-known, I have a thesaurus that I look through, that’s

also Collins, so that’s probably one of the best known ones.

Feifei: Nicola 提到她经常用到 Collins 出版的字典， 她认为这个出版商的字典算是最好用的。

Helen: Apart from dictionaries, she also uses a thesaurus which shows words of

similar meanings.
