How to Stay Safe When Biking

Biking is one of my favorite activities! I love feeling the wind

in my hair and the sense of freedom as I pedal along. However,

riding a bike also comes with important responsibilities to keep

myself and others safe on the roads. Here are some key tips for

being a safe and responsible cyclist:

Always Wear a Helmet

This is probably the most important rule of all. A helmet can

literally save your life if you fall off your bike and hit your head.

Make sure to get a helmet that fits properly and wear it every

single time you ride, even if it's just around the neighborhood.

Don't be tempted to go helmet-less because it messes up your

hair or you think it looks uncool - protecting your brain is way

more important!

Obey All Traffic Signs and Signals

When you're on your bike, you have to follow the same

traffic rules that cars do. That means stopping at stop signs and

red lights, using turn signals, and yielding to pedestrians. Bikes

may be smaller, but you can still seriously injure someone if you

don't follow proper traffic safety protocols. Pretend you are

driving a very small car and act accordingly.

Ride on the Right Side of the Road

In most places, the rule is that bicycles should keep to the

right side of the road, traveling in the same direction as cars. This

allows faster traffic to pass on the left. Riding against traffic is

illegal and extremely dangerous since drivers won't be expecting

a vehicle coming towards them.

Use Hand Signals

Just like cars use turn signals, cyclists should use hand

signals to communicate their intentions to turn or stop. This lets

other vehicles around you know what you plan to do next. To

signal a left turn, stretch your left arm straight out. For a right

turn, stretch your right arm straight out. To indicate you are

slowing or stopping, stick your left arm out and bend it down at

the elbow.
