My Summer Holiday Adventure
Summer holidays are the best time of the year for kids like
me! No more waking up early, no more homework, and two
whole months of pure freedom. This summer was extra special
because my parents surprised me and my little sister with a trip
to a ranch in the countryside. I had never been to a real ranch
before, so I was super excited!
The ranch was huge, with wide open fields, a big red barn,
and lots of different animals like cows, horses, chickens, and even
a few friendly dogs. Our tiny city apartment felt like a world away.
On the first morning, we met Jim, the friendly ranch owner who
showed us around. He introduced us to Daisy, a beautiful brown
horse. "She's a gentle old girl," Jim said as he let me pet her soft
nose. I was a little nervous at first, since Daisy was so much
bigger than me, but she seemed just as curious about us as we
were about her.
After our tour, Jim taught us all about life on the ranch. He
showed us how to feed the chickens, collect eggs from their
coops, and milk the cows. Milking a cow was definitely the
hardest job! Those cows were strong and didn't make it easy. My
arms got really tired from pulling on their udders, but I was
determined to get the hang of it. Jim said I was a natural farmer
in the making.
My favorite part was definitely spending time with the
horses. Every morning after breakfast, Jim would take my sister
and me to the stables to groom and ride Daisy and her husband,
Buck. Grooming the horses was relaxing and I loved the feeling
of brushing their soft coats. Riding was a little scary at first since
the horses were so tall, but Jim led us around the corral at a nice
slow pace until we got used to it. By the end of the week, I was
trotting and riding all over the ranch grounds like a pro!
On the hottest days, we'd cool off by swimming in the big
pond down the hill from the ranch house. The water was freezing
cold but felt amazing after working all morning. Once, I spotted a
frog sitting on a lily pad and tried to sneak up and peek at it, but
it quickly jumped back into the pond with a "ribbit!" Jim said
there were lots of critters living in that pond and we had to be
careful not to scare them away.
