Mr. Keizoh Honda, technical executive of Rechargeable Battery System
of Transmission Distribution & Industrial Systems Company in Toshiba
Corporation, said, “We are a relative new-comer to the rechargeable battery
business. But, we feel quite a positive feedback about their evaluations of
“SCiB
TM
” from automobile manufacturers.” With its lithium-ion rechargeable
battery using lithium-titanate at anode, branded as SCiB
TM
, Toshiba made an
entry to the rechargeable battery business last spring. It is steady building up track records for applications of
electric bicycles and AGV (automatic guided vehicles) for factories and warehouses. The target at which
Toshiba aims next is lithium-ion battery market for HEVs and EVs. The company has finished the development
of batteries for HEVs, which advance output performance based on the batteries for the general industrial use.
Furthermore, Toshiba begins sample shipment of high-energy lithium-ion batteries for EVs this fall. Here, we
interview Mr. Honda about the advantages and features of Toshiba’s lithium-ion batteries for automotive use.

What are the main differences between SCiB
TM
batteries and traditional lithium-ion batteries?
The biggest difference between the two is that conventional lithium-ion batteries use carbon materials for
anode, while SCiB
TM
batteries use lithium-titanate. LTO, the main component of the SCiB
TM
battery, is a
kind of ceramic used for materials like dyes, paints and so on. SCiB
TM
utilizes such material by processing
into nano-scale superfine micro-powder to use as an electrode material. Using LTO as anode material also
allows us to use wider range of selections of materials for cathode material and electrolytic solution. That is
why LTO can realize various advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Can you explain the features of SCiB
TM
batteries?
SCiB
TM
batteries offer various features that are unavailable with conventional lithium-ion rechargeable
batteries. Of these features, the most significant one is safety (Fig.1). When we decided to work on developing
rechargeable batteries, we looked at the safety issues associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are having some difficulties to promote adoption beyond mobile phones and personal
computers. This is mainly because of safety issues they currently have. Our basic attitudes toward rechargeable
batteries are that we concern safety first. SCiB
TM
batteries will not rapture or catch fire, even if external
pressure or forces crush them or if some metal object penetrates inside (see Fig.2).
In addition to safety feature, SCiB
TM
batteries are endowed with features required to use for HEVs/EVs,
including a long service life, quick charging, low-temperature operation, and so on. Automobile manufacturers
value those features of SCiB
TM
very highly.
