M: Researchers in China have shown an ancient skull to the world for the first time. The
skull could belong to a completely new species of humans that lived in Asia over 146,000 years
could be from a group of humans that are the closest relatives to us. The researchers have
nicknamed the person the skull came from “Dragon Man”. It was originally found by a Chinese
worker in the city of Harbin in 1933 but was kept hidden at the bottom of his family's well. It stayed
there for nearly 90 years. The man recently told his family about the skull before he died. His family
located it and gave it to scientists.
Scientists say Dragon Man could greatly change our understanding of human evolution. They
say he looked more like today's humans than any other members of the human family tree. The
species Dragon Man belonged to is probably closer to modern-day humans than Neanderthals were.
Researcher Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum in London described Dragon Man's group.
He said, “From the winter temperatures in Harbin today, it looks like they were coping with even
extreme cold than the Neanderthals.”

“They’re following me!” I thought to myself
,
as I watched the two young men on motorbikes
slow down next to me as I drove. “Ignore them. They’ll go away.” I decided and turned my attention
back to the road. As a woman living in a big city, such encounters were not new, but I was unusually
disturbed by a strange sadness that day. I realized that whenever I stopped at a signal, the two bikers
would also pause alongside, staring intently (
热切地
).
This continued through three traffic signals, leaving no room for doubt. I drove as fast as I
could to stay ahead of them, but I couldn’t shake them off for the busy evening traffic. I finally
reached home and released a sigh of relief until I realized that they had chased me all the way to my
doorstep. Even scarier, they were now off the bike and at the gates, trying to talk to me.
Feeling safer on familiar ground, I turned back to tell them off. “Please don’t get us wrong,”
one of them said, his tone low and concerned. “We saw you weeping inside your car and wanted to
make sure you were okay.”
I realized in an instant what must have happened. The men had seen me breaking down in my
car and followed me out of concern. I thanked them sincerely. My emotions got better at the time. I
never saw them again. But even more than 10 years later, I still am struck by their selfless concern
for a stranger and remember them with gratitude.

Schoolchildren across the United Kingdom will learn how to fend off loneliness. In January,
British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed the first “minister of loneliness”. This week, her
administration released an 84-page plan detailing the actions it will take to prevent loneliness.
Starting in primary school, students will have lessons in “relationships education”.
The Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad, one of the foremost
scholars on loneliness in the United States, warns that the a significant loneliness problem
of its own and that schools desperately need to follow the U.K.’s lead and include preventive
measures into their lessons.
Indeed, according to a recent report by the health-care company Cigna, nearly half of adults in
the U.S. reported feeling alone. Marriage rates and religious-participation rates are also dropping
and both are risk factors for social isolation and loneliness. The prevalence (
普遍
) of loneliness
seems to be especially
acute
among young adults. One study found that Americans aged 21 to 30
reported feeling lonely twice as many days as adults aged 50 to 70. Studies suggest loneliness results
in a variety of health issues, such as decreased immunity to viral infections, poor sleep, and
cardiovascular (
心血管的
) issues
.
The ideal school curriculum (
课程
) for teaching loneliness prevention would target social
isolation as well as the cognitive processes that make people feel lonely. “Recognizing that it’s
something that we need to take seriously for our health is a primary and critical step,” Holt- Lunstad
says. She advocates for a sort of “social education” that would be put into existing health-education
curriculum to teach students how to build and maintain friendships and relationships.
28.
How does Holt-Lunstad find the loneliness problem in the United States
?
A.
It is not serious and easy to deal with.
B.
It is serious and needs measures to control.
C.
It is not as serious as in the United Kingdom.
D.
It is more serious than it is in the United Kingdom.

“It's possible to jump to happy endings a little too quickly,” says Laura King, PhD, a
psychology professor at the University of Missouri, Columbia. In her research with people who
have experienced major life challenges, King has found that people whose stories gloss over
(掩盖)
conflict tend to become happier over the course of two years.
“The ability to take some time and experience grief
(悲伤)
or unhappiness improves your
ability to appreciate the world in all its richness and complexity,” King says.
In one study, King asked parents to tell the story of discovering that their child had Down
syndrome. Immediately after telling their stories and again two years later, the parents completed
measures of subjective well-being. Researchers blind to the participants' test scores read their stories
and recorded the presence of foreshadowing
(预示)
and whether the stories had happy or sad
beginnings and endings. The researchers also scored how vividly the stories illustrated conflict,
struggle and exploration.
Two years later, the parents who had grown happier were the ones who had written stories with
happy endings. “I knew everything would be all right,” one woman wrote. Another parent wrote, “I
know my daughter is quite special. She's the closest I've come to an angel on Earth.”
However, only the parents who first vividly described their mixed feelings upon learning of
their child's diagnosis grew happier. “I cried a lot,” wrote a parent. “The pain was so deep. I felt
cheated. I could hardly function.” These were also the parents who later seemed best able to fully
appreciate their children's gifts and limitations.
32.
What did the study find?
A.
People with sick child tend to be happier.
B.
People usually jump to happy endings too quickly.
C.
People who go through challenges may become happier.
D.
People need to suffer difficulty to be able to appreciate happiness.
33.
What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.
Who the research focused on.
B.
Why researchers did the study.
C.
What benefit the finding will bring us.

I realized that whenever I stopped at a signal, the two bikers
would also pause alongside, staring intently (
