Making my way slowly along the cliff (悬崖) face, I gazed (注视) at the great

appearance of each temple I passed. As I entered the first ce and looked up at the

feitian—an imagined flying god in Buddhist art, I wondered how many hundreds of

thousands of others, from near and far, he looked at the same great paintings and

statues.

Sometime between the 4

th

and 14

th

century, Mogao was an important Buddhist

center connecting East Asia and South Asia. Hundreds of ces were carved into a

cliff face running along the Daquan River. Located on the ancient Silk Road, one

of the great trade routes in ancient times, it created an environment of artistic

and cultural exchange between the different cultures.

My personal adventure to Dunhuang had taken me, by way of train and bus, from

Xining in Qinghai Province to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, and through the Jiayu

Pass. From there, I continued on through Yumen Pass, also known as the Jade Gate,

and crossed the Gobi Desert to find this all and sleepy desert town, and to see

these ces for myself.

As I explored the temples,I was amazed by the vivness (生动性) of the

paintings and statues. It was almost as though they were painted or carved the day

before. I had discovered the reason why people trel.

There are more than 2,000 coloured statues that were carved 1,500 years ago.

More than 1,400statues are well-protected so they can still be appreciated. During

the thousand years of artistic activity, the style of the wall paintings and

statues changed. The early ces show greater Indian and Western influences, while

during the Tang Dynasty the influences of Chinese painting styles became

noticeable.

Today, the Mogao Ces stand out from the desert like a shinning pearl on the

Silk Road.

Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously

The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past

decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are

thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France,

which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For

example, more than a third of the world's sharks are still threatened with

extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.

“I think the good news is that sustainable (可持续的) fishing industry are

possible,” says Beth Poloro, a biologist at Arizona State University. “We can

eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to

dying out or extinction." At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not

encourage us to catch as many fish as we want. “We need to keep doing what's

working." Poloro adds.

The IUCN, which determines the world's most endangered species on its Red List

of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving

in the other direction, onto the Red List. Like the Komodo dragon, an lizard (蜥蜴),

it is at particular risk from climate change.

Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and

continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the

world.

Learn to Exist in Harmony with Nature

Every time I think about Zhaxi's words “We’re not trying to se the animals.

Actually, we’re trying to se ourselves.”, the image of Tibetan antelopes appears

in my mind. For them, the 1980s and 1990s were bad times. The population dropped

by more than 50 percent. There were two causes of this serious situation. For one

thing, hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. For another, as new roads

and railways were built, their habitats were becoming aller. To se this species

from extinction, national nature reserves were established to prove shelter for

antelopes. Beses, brges and gates were added to help them move safely across

different habitats. In my opinion, when harming wildlife like antelopes, we are

destroying ourselves, because we are also part of nature and cannot survive on our

own. Only when we live in harmony with nature can we se ourselves.

Silk Road.

Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously

endangered or he moved off the leading international list of endangered species

entirely.

Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and

continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the

edge of dying out. But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal
