My Big Adventure at University
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 8 years old. My big sister
Jessica just started university this year and I think it's the coolest
thing ever! She's living in a huge building called a "dorm" with
lots of other students. It's kind of like a giant sleepover party that
never ends!
Jessica says university is really fun but also a lot of hard work.
She has to go to these things called "classes" where teachers
called "professors" talk to everyone for a long time about super
smart topics. Jessica is studying things like math, science, English
literature, and something called "philosophy" which sounds
really deep and mysterious.
At first I thought it would be super boring to just sit there
and listen to people talk all day. But Jessica says the professors
are really interesting and know pretty much everything about
their subjects. She even gets to do fun activities like experiments
in the science lab! Jessica also has to read a ton of books and
write lots of papers and essays. I'm glad I don't have that much
homework yet.
The best part though is that Jessica lives right on campus.
Her dorm is just a short walk from all her classrooms, the libraries,
the cafeterias, and even a huge gym and sports facilities. Jessica
said living on campus makes it easy to get involved in lots of
activities beyond just classes.
There are hundreds of clubs that students can join for
anything you can imagine - sports, music, languages, video
games, you name it! Jessica joined an intramural soccer team
and is also part of the French club since she's been learning
French since high school. She said making friends from all over
the world who have different interests and backgrounds is one of
the best parts of university life.
Another really cool thing about university is that Jessica gets
to be totally independent and make her own choices. She picks
her own classes, decides her own schedule, and even chooses
what cafeteria food to eat (although she says the dining halls
could definitely improve their menu!). Jessica has
so much more freedom than she did at home or in high
school.
