LONDON (Reuters) — Organic (有机的) fruit, delivered right to the
doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not
possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the
supermarket buying organic food.
“Organic produce is always better,” Gold said. “The food is free of
pesticides (农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large
farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.”
Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the_organic_trend,_and supermarkets across Britain are
counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they
are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? Market research shows that Gold and
others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences — but their knowledge of organic
food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about
three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand.” The demand for
organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market, said Sue Flock, a
specialist in this line of business.
1.More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because ________.
A.they are getting richer
B.they can get the food anywhere
C.they consider the food free of pollution
D.they like home-grown fruit
由文章第一段信息“Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what
Gabriel Gold prefers”和其次段信息“you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms”和“Gold is
one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend”可知D项正确。
2.According to the text, most organic produce sold in Britain ________.
A.grows indoors all year round
B.is produced outside Britain
C.is grown on family farms
D.is produced on large farms
由文章其次段Gold所说的话“The food is free of pesticides, and you are generally
supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is
more tasty.”
3.The underlined words “the organic trend” in the text probably mean “________”.
A.growing interest in organic food
B.better qualities of organic food
C.rising market for organic food
D.higher prices of organic food
4.What is the best title for this news story?
A.Organic Food — Healthy, or Just for the Wealthy?
B.The Making of Organic Food in Britain
C.Organic Food — to Import or Not

My son Daniel's love for surfing began at the age of 13. After school he wore
his wet suit, walked out beyond the surf line and waited to be challenged by his three- to
six-foot companions. Daniel's love of the ride was tested one fateful afternoon.
“Your son's been in an accident,” the lifeguard (救生员) reported over the phone
to my husband Mike. “When he surfaced to the top of the water, the point of the board was heading toward his eye.”
Mike rushed him to the emergency room. He received 26 stitches (缝针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of
his nose.
I was on an airplane flying home from a speaking arrangement while Dan's eye was being stitched. Mike drove
directly to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Dan was waiting in
the car. “Daniel?” I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been awful that day. “He's been
in an accident, but he's going to be fine.” A travelling working mother's worst nightmare had come true.
I sobbed telling Daniel how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called. “It's okay, Mom,”
he comforted me. “You don't know how to surf anyway.” “What?” I asked, confused by his reason. “I'll be
fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days.” Was he out of his mind? For the next seven days he
kept pressing me to let him go back on the board. One day after I repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he said,
“Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love.” I gave in.
I was tested in my own backyard on an important principle that I teach audiences in distant cities: Passionate (热
忱的) people hug what they love and never give up.
5.While surfing that afternoon, Daniel ________.
A.was in trouble beyond the safe surf line
B.was given several tests by the lifeguard
C.was challenged by several of his friends
D.was hurt in the eye by his surfing board
由其次段“When he surfaced to the top of the water, the point of the board was
heading toward his eye.”
6.What made the author feel confused?
A.Daniel's strong desire to surf again.
B.Daniel's going mad after the accident.
C.Daniel's dream about his surfing career.
D.Daniel's confidence in recovering soon.
I asked, confused by his reason.‘I'll be fine. The
doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days.’”
7.We can infer that the author was a ________.
A.stewardess B.surf trainer
C.housewife D.motivational speaker
由第三段“I was on an airplane flying home from a speaking arrangement”和最终
一段“ ... an important principle that I teach audiences in distant cities”可知,作者是一个演讲者。
8.What lesson did the author learn from her son?
A.Enthusiastic people won't give up their dreams easily.
B.A boy may seek his interest in surfing out of madness.
C.Children sometimes have their own opinions about life.
D.Mothers regret all the time for leaving their children alone.

Road traffic crashes kill 1.25 million people each year worldwide. The statistics are part of the “Global Status
Report on Road Safety 2021”. The report surveyed 180 countries, and it shows the number of annual deaths from
traffic crashes is stabilizing (稳定). And that is good news as the number of motor vehicles grows worldwide. But
the data also show that road crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29. Young adults
around the world are the worst driving risks. Even in the U.S., drivers aged 15 to 24 account for about 30 percent
of all driving-related accidents. But the World Health Organization (WHO) says they are preventable.
The WHO report also finds a big gap in road safety and deaths between poor and rich countries. Poor countries
have only 54 percent of the world's vehicles. But those countries have some of the worst safety statistics in the
report. “Africa has only two percent of the world's vehicles, but has the highest death rate on the road,” says
Etienne Krug, the head of the WHO Department of Non-communicable Diseases. Sweden, the Netherlands and the
United Kingdom are leaders in preventing traffic deaths.
Stronger road safety laws and stricter vehicle safety requirements in developing countries would prevent many
accidents. Laws can quickly influence driving behavior. In only three years, 17 countries became safer by putting
tougher road safety laws into effect. Some of those laws include banning drunk driving, requiring cyclists and
motorcycle drivers to wear helmets and making safety belts mandatory (强制性的) in all vehicles. Good injury care
after a crash can cut the number of deaths from road injuries in half. Of course, there are also many other ways to
make roads safer.
9.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to ________.
A.motor vehicles B.the statistics
C.traffic crashes D.young drivers
10.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.People in developed countries are very skilled at driving.
B.Africa has to take some measures to prevent traffic deaths.
C.The Netherlands has done the best in avoiding traffic accidents.
D.Poor countries need to buy fewer cars to reduce traffic accidents.
11.What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph following the text?
A.More ways to make roads safer.
B.Suggestions on good injury care.
C.The number of deaths from accidents.
D.Other road safety laws in poor countries.
12.The text is mainly about ________.
A.the danger of driving alone
B.the No.1 killer among the youth
C.the ways to avoid road accidents
D.the importance of helmets in driving cars
A PIONEER FOR ALL PEOPLE
Although he is one of China's most famous scientists, Yuan Longping considers himself a farmer, for he works
the land to do his research. Indeed, his sunburnt face and arms and his slim, strong body are just like those of
millions of Chinese farmers, for whom he has struggled for the past five decades. Yuan Longping grows what is
called super hybrid rice. In 1973, he became the first agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has a high
output. This special strain of rice makes it possible to produce 20% more of the crop in the same fields. Now
more than 60% of the rice produced in China each year is from this hybrid strain.
Born in 1930, Yuan Longping graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953. Since then, finding
ways to grow more rice has been his life goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for increasing the rice
output. At that time, hunger was a disturbing problem in many parts of the countryside. Yuan Longping searched
for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the fields. In 1950, Chinese farmers could produce
about fifty-six million tons of rice. In a recent harvest, however, nearly two hundred million tons of rice was
produced. These increased harvests mean that 22% of the world's people are fed from just 7% of the farmland in the
world. Yuan Longping is now circulating his knowledge in India, Vietnam and many other less developed
countries to increase their rice harvests. Thanks to his research, the UN has more tools in the battle to rid the
world of hunger. Using his hybrid rice, farmers are producing harvests twice as large as before.
Yuan Longping is quite satisfied with his life. However, he doesn't care about being famous. He feels it gives
him less freedom to do his research. He would much rather keep time for his hobbies. He enjoys listening to
violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life
also means very little to him. Indeed, he believes that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer
troubles. He therefore gives millions of yuan to equip others for their research in agriculture.
Just dreaming for things, however, costs nothing. Long ago Yuan Longping had a dream about rice plants as
tall as sorghum. Each ear of rice was as big as an ear of corn and each grain of rice was as huge as a peanut. He
awoke from his dream with the hope of producing a kind of rice that could feed more people. Now, many years later,
Yuan Longping has another dream: to export his rice so that it can be grown around the globe. One dream is not
always enough, especially for a person who loves and cares for his people.

tougher road safety laws into effect.
