Spencer Lewis James; Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Hanover, NH 03755, USA
In western Syria, a destroyed hospital lies in ruins after confl ict laid waste to its once-protective walls. Explosions have torn through its walls, and bullet holes litter everything from the fl oor to
the ceiling. When I saw this place I imagined the health-care workers and patients with their families who once fi lled these rooms, their injuries and illnesses being treated just as they would be
in any other health-care facility around the world. This hospital once served as a sanctuary for the sick and disenfranchised, but the indiscriminate brutality of war has rendered it a crumbling
pile of cement. What remains when health services are destroyed? When innocent people are caught in the crossfi re of confl ict, hospitals are vital places where people can fi nd the treatment and
support they need. When bullets and bombs destroy even this last respite, the warring forces have taken away people’s fundamental right to health in the land they are fi ghting over, and
I wonder what is still left to be won.
