was still a shortage of food for every ant in the army.

So the Queen ordered her soldier ants to work all day and all night without resting for

the next few weeks. Since all her soldier ants were strong and well-trained, they followed her

order and did their best to store the food for the coming winter. However, a young soldier ant,

Sam refused to work. He thought to himself, “Why don’t I just rest since there are so many

other ants working for the Queen? There must be enough food for the winter with other ants’

work.”

Soon, the captain ant found out that Sam was not working. He informed the Queen at

When three men in California were taken to a hospital with strange symptoms (症状),

the hospital doctors thought the men had been poisoned(中毒). They felt dizzy (眩晕), tired,

and weak. The men couldn’t speak, and they had trouble breathing. The doctors couldn’t

work out what was wrong with the men until they found out the three men were all cooks,

and they had just shared a dish of fugu (河豚).

Fugu, the Japanese name for the puffer fish, is one of the strangest fish in the ocean. The

puffer fish gets its name from the way the fish keeps itself safe when it faces enemies.

Whenever it is attacked, the fish blows up its body to over twice its usual size!

The reason why the three men were taken to the hospital is that the puffer fish is also

very poisonous. If you eat a whole puffer fish, you will probably die.

The symptoms of fugu poisoning are a strange feeling around the mouth and throat, and

breathing difficulty. You can’t breathe and your body can’t get any air. Your brain still works

perfectly, however, so you know you are dying, but you can’t speak or do anything about it.

Despite the danger of fugu poisoning, this fish is actually a very popular kind of food in

Japan. Because of the danger, fugu can only be prepared by cooks with a special license (执照) from the government. These cooks are trained to identify and take out the poisonous parts

of the fish. Most people who die from eating fugu these days are people who have tried their

hand at preparing the fish themselves.

16.The writer starts the passage by ________.

A.mentioning a study

C.telling a real story

B.asking a question

D.making a comparison

17.The puffer fish gets its name because of the way it ________.

A.eats enemies

A.people all over the world enjoy the dish of fugu

B.the government does not allow people to cook fugu

C.cooking fugu needs licenses and special training

D.it is not dangerous to cook fugu by ordinary people

20.We can probably find the article in a(n) ________.

A.newspaper

Many classrooms today have computers in them. However, there are usually not enough

for each student to use one at the same time. Computers cost a lot and they also take up space

in small classrooms. Laptop computers are more convenient because they need less space,

and they can be carried or moved easily. However, most schools still cannot have enough

money to buy them for every student.

These days there are cheaper devices (设备) that are small enough to be held in one hand

but are still very powerful. The development of these handheld devices is allowing more

schools to bring technology into classrooms.

Some of the first handheld devices were called PADs. They were used to help people in

business stay well-planned. They could make lists of things to do each day, store important

phone numbers, and even make files for work. Now we have smart phones and small tablets

(平板电脑). These latest devices have improved a lot since those early PDA devices. Those

used in schools today can do all the things the early PDAs did and more. They

can be

connected to the internet, run useful programs and help in science experiments.

Because handheld devices are quite cheap, schools can buy more of them. In some

schools, students pay some money at the beginning of the year for a handheld device and they

can get the money back at the end of the year if they return the device in good condition.

In the future, schools might be able to buy computers or laptops for every student.

Handheld devices are turning out to be good things to use instead until then.

21.Schools don’t provide every student with a laptop computer because ________.

A.there is not enough space

B.there is not enough money

C.most students have their own laptops

D.the computer programs are not useful

试卷第4页,共8页

22.In addition to what the early handheld devices did, the latest ones can ________.

A.make a to-do list

C.make files for work

B.store phone numbers

D.help in experiments

23.The underlined word “they” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.

A.students B.teachers C.schools D.businessmen

24.From the passage, we can infer that ________.

A.students need to learn how to write programs

B.small cheap devices can be helpful in classrooms

C.schools should provide more computer classes

D.all the students can use handheld devices for free

25.The best title for the passage can be “________”.
